Help! before I return it (Win 10, Surface Book 2)
Discussion
Evening All,
I have recently sold my trusty MacBook Pro of 2 years, that rarely crashed and purchased a brand new Surface Book 2.
I have had it about 3 weeks, only use legitimate software. When playing games or watching video (demanding) it is fine.
But when surfing the web, or using word and excel in multiple windows I seem to get a high frequency of crashes. I have kept it up to date, removed the VPN and it still does it.
I love the laptop, keyboard is ace, I'm doing my dissertation and its great (Apart from the key symbols are quite light) But its is frustratingly crashing when I'm working.
Can any of you kind fellow take a look at my event log? before I return it and start the hunt again!!!
Regards
(yes I can hear you all say what did you expect going back to windows...)

What version of Windows 10 are you running?
There are reports of a lot of issues with the latest update "1909".
If you are on 1909, the first thing I would do is to rollback to 1903.

Why the hell did you go from Mac to Windows - you bought this on yourself ...

As a starting point, make sure it’s fully patched and all drivers are up-to-date.
I absolutely hate Windows, nothing but trouble, given I work in IT (not with OS as such but obviously I can’t avoid them ...
By far, we see more issues with Windows systems as opposed to RedHat for example. I don;t really deal with desktops, but just as an observation, we have far more issues with Windows laptops as opposed to Macs. That said, we’re all mostly Windows now. WHen I did have a Mac for a couple of years, it never crashed, Windows, crashes multiple times a year.

As a benchmark, my win 10 pc running full on games and work apps has never crashed whilst I've been working. I remember one crash on the last 6 odd years., it really should not be crashing. Don't accept that it is normal. It isn't.
Probably a hardware / driver issue.
I'd personally hand it back and ask for another. It cant have been cheap and you should not be having to roll back updates.
Edit . Try Bibbs advice first. Sounds very plausible. Crashes are more often than not graphic driver related.

Although Win10 is $HI^ the behaviour you described is not normal, even for windows. It can be hardware related, you won't know unless you get it diagnosed or do a fresh system install.I'd say get a replacement unit. If you don't mind windows.

Windows 10 is fine (mostly). What do you define as a crash? What web browser are you running? Is the device getting particularly hot?I have recently sold my trusty MacBook Pro of 2 years, that rarely crashed and purchased a brand new Surface Book 2.

Hi all,
so it is a Surface Book 2(16GB RAM, i7-8650U with GeForce 1050 ), version 1909, it was updated by a windows tech remoting in and digging around for 2 hours!!!!! so far only one semi freeze type thing.
Normally when using multiple windows as opposed to gaming (Which is oddly fine...)
I didn't know I can load the GFX drivers separately, thought with Win10 you had to let "it" do it
Did you just go to the OEM website and get them?

Yeah, I'm working on the machine now. I've 'NVIDIA Control Panel' and 'GeForce Experience' installed, and I think that they did the upgrade. The default installed driver wouldn't even do the 3d preview in the control panel.Did you just go to the OEM website and get them?
Start by looking here, and stick if screenshots if you think it would help.
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance\Reliability Monitor
Windows 10 is remarkably solid - you can mostly ignore the doubters.
Duff hardware does still happen. My first Macbook lasted 31 days before the SSD failed terminally and unrecoverably.
Updating the Nvidia drivers is a good shout. Annoyingly NVidia now require you to have a username/password to get the damn things, but it's worth doing.

What happens when it "crashes" exactly?
What are you doing at the time?
What stops working / what still works?
What error messages or codes are displayed?
For balance, I also "work in IT". Last place had over 150,000 Windows devices and a few hundred Macs. Guess which caused the most headaches... currently place much smaller scale but same story. With Windows its likely it's something else you've installed... this "VPN" you mention... did this include some sort of installer and the purpose is to obfuscate your location and watch dodgy video?

Hi all,
originally it was the blue screen of doom. Kernell error, based on memory or video memory. not when streaming video or gaming, but when using word and excel.
Since the windows team remoted in, it seems ok. till this morning when it just would not turn off or restart, all I wanted to do was send an email.
I'm happy to send up a event log, for any IT ninjas to have a look.
I use "Freedome" VPN, provided by work as we have to use public wifi to send email, handy for watching EastEnders abroad... But win 10 does not like it.

That's grim!
Widen out the columns to see what's actually crashing. A lot of those are flagged as application failures.
Maybe try the Windows Memory diagnostic?
