I have a friend who might have to leave their 17 year old home alone for a couple of nights before back up can help.

They are a bit concerned about the kid having friends over etc and the idea of a hidden security camera came up.

Must be wifi, and controllable via an iPhone app, ie turn it on & off and see if there is anything going on in the field of vision. It doesn't necessarily have to record, but I know most probably do, and motion sensing isn't a necessity. Battery operated might be best.

Any suggestions on a device that might work, be easy to set up and won't break the bank?

I've seen the 30 GBP ones on Amazon, but they only appear to have an hour of battery and its not clear if you can turn the camera on an off remotely via the app.

Wow, they sound awesome! Tell them to give the lad some slack, they too were 17 once and no doubt would have done exactly the same.

Glad I grew up when hidden cameras were something only Bond had. I’d have been in so much st.

So what if he/she has friends round or a party? No big deal so long as they are respectful young people and the house isn't wrecked.

Jesus christ, if they cant be trusted for a few days at 17, what hope is there? Says more about the parents than thier child. Many people are living alone, working, or have kids themselves at that age!

The most I'd consider is a chat with the 17 year old to say that they can have people over so long as they are respectful and not go crazy on alcohol and the house is back to normal before they return. Then a friendly chat with the neighbour's to say you're going away for a few days and can they keep an eye out for anything unusual.

If they think It's not going to happen, they're pretty naive. It's called growing up.

NB:
There's also an element of dealing with what is discovered, which is a much larger problem. you cannot tell them about a hidden camera or it becomes useless and shows distrust from parent-child.

What if they see something they don't like? Ie, having sex around the house or with multiple people either separately or at the same time?! Then what?! You cant then confront them and say, look - we installed a hidden wifi camera! That would cause all sorts of issues! If they want to spy, they have to be prepared to see something they might not want to.

Sometimes it's better off not knowing.

I used to be left alone in the 90s in my teens for weekends when my parents went away from about 14 I think when dropping Es was all the rage.

Always had parties. Always cleaned up. And had my wonderfully dull and boring neighbours not mentioned one to my parents they would never have known (not that it disturbed them, they were both profoundly deaf).

Defo cut them some slack they’re essentially an adult!

I guess they can’t trust their 17 year old?
There are some responsible 17 year olds and some where everyone in town will end up at the party.

I went to a couple of parties 15 years ago where things ended up pretty bad.
Patio doors ended up smashed in, stair bannisters ended up as pretty much baseball bats and the parents car was taken from the drive.
It’s not your immediate circle of friends, it’s the people who might turn up once they know the best looking girl around has came to the party or if someone is into drugs that’s a friend of a friend asks their dealer to deliver.

Yi camera on Amazon. £20 or so add a memory card. Put it in the living room window and a bedroom window and see who comes and goes.
Saves potentially seeing their 17 year old child naked.
