BT are sending me a new router. I takes an age to change all the connections over so is it possible to change the new routers SSID to that of the old one along with the password to save changes?

Nope, none at all..
I've done exactly what you're doing to make life easier during a router change too..

Do yourself a favour and separate the 2.4ghz and 5ghz SSID, give them a different name, then you can choose the faster and less crowded 5GHz SSID on your devices.

Dependent on property construction and a heap of other potential issues.
5GHz is great, in the right circumstances.

It MAY be possible to cheat slightly and save time
It depends if the new router is the same as the old one. On some BT Homehubs and Smarthubs you can back the settings up from a file
So as long as you can get into your old router and access the interface and are using a PC or laptop or Mac (dunno how you do it on a tablet don't think you can)
What you do is go into the router settings find maintenance or admin or wherever it is and do a back up this gives you a config file that probably goes by default to your downloads folder
Then when it arrives connect to the new router log in with the new routers admin and password settings and then restore this new router from the back up file you have created
After doing that the new router assumes the settings of the old. Remember that the admin user name and password will be what the OLD routers was
BUT
The big But is that BT tend to have 2 manufacturers of their routers I think they are Sagem and Huawei but not too sure. They all look similar in fact almost identical the differences being that they are either a Type A or Type B.
You can generally do this if both the old and new are the same type but not if they are mixed

Remember that doing this will change the wifi names and passwords to what they were on the old one. If you changed the admin log in name and password to one of your choosing on the old one then the new one will also have that log in.

You may also find that if you go into a laptops wifi settings then it will log to the new "old" router fine but that on close inspection your wifi name may have the number 2 after it as yor laptop is intelligent enough to understand that the gateway ip address is different to what it was before. By that it simply means that your public IP address has changed as the new router has a different mac address to the old
