Footage released today by Yorkshire Police of a horrific head on smash.
The article credits the riders air-bag suit as a life saver. He was bloody lucky, or indeed unlucky depending on your perspective.
Some may disagree, but I don’t think any of us could have avoided that.

Not many could have avoided that, given enough attempts maybe taking to the scenery would have had a better outcome on rider health who knows.

Looks like driver didn't know the road and was caught out, no high revs, not appearing to be going 10/10ths.

st situation all round.

Given the colour, looks like an Impreza WR1. Not driven very well here. Massive understeer to where he has put on extra steering on the tightening radius and unfortunately the biker was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'd say 9/10 riders would crash in that situation. Maybe a ultra modern superbike with the best abs might have not endo'd

I suspect the endo was what saved him going through the windscreen, and may have saved his life.

I had an off years ago... Purely my fault... And ended up over the bars at around 60mph. I tumbled and rolled which meant I escaped with just minor bruising.

Driver was an appropriately named "Mr Pratt". Biker was fortunate to survive that.

6 months longer in prison than the Hastings bikers got for popping a few wheelies. Fair?

I suspect you're probably right tbh, that and the airbag suit. Good advert for them. I wonder if his friends all have one now.

This is kind of why I'm just anti doing anything silly on roads these days. They aren't truly safe.
I'm not suggesting bikers were doing anything silly in any way, just meant in general.

Car driver looking at his phone maybe? Terrible for the biker... No way he could've avoided it, I like to think I'm a hero and could've avoided it, but that's bks.

I'd have been toast if I'd been the biker. I don't care if your surname is McGuinness, no one was avoiding that.

The Scooby driver is a weapons grade end of a bell.

The only way to avoid I think would have been an instinctive, self sacrificing exit stage left. But easy to say that when you’re not in the moment. For 99.9% of riders it would have played out exactly the way it did.

If the car driver had been doing 50mph and the same happened would it have still been dangerous driving from a legal POV?.

Potentially. Driving under the speed limit doesn’t remove any element of potential dangerousness.
If you’re in a National limit, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to take every corner at 60mph?
Dangerous driving is where the driving ‘falls far below the standard expected of a careful and competent driver’.

no. like many who pilot fast machinery he has almost zero self awareness of just how much skill he lacks.

You don't know what you don't know.

He didn't know a lot, didn't know it and the biker paid the price.

The car was far from out of control, and wasn't actually going that fast. The issue was lazy, unprepared driving lacking in skill, vision and awareness.
Sorry if it read the other way; I totally agree with you.
Biker paid very heavy price for the car driver's ineptitude, and lack of care for other road users

How could it be anything else? He was on the wrong side of the road coming round a bend!

I saw this yesterday and thought what an utter tt the car driver was.

Unfortunately, I see driving like this every day on the road outside my house and that's a 30mph limit. Special mention to the dhead who passes our house with his stupidly loud blue Impreza at full chat.

A lamppost over the road was only replaced the other day. It was wiped out last year. Only a matter of time before the new one is cleaned up.

I agree. Extremely lucky to be alive.

However (and I know I’m gonna be shot down on the biker thread for this) but, 16 months in jail for veering over the other side of the road? I haven’t seen footage of before the crash to see how he was driving but he was doing the limit (ok a tiny bit over) and misjudged the corner.

16 months seems extremely harsh if there was no other aggregating circumstances (like doing 100mph down the straight beforehand).

I’d say road markings and lack of bad bend signs are as much to blame.

Had it have been a 40mph limit and he was doing 60mph then fair enough. Throw the book at him, but this was a misjudgment (albeit with an amazingly bad outcome) and 16 months in prison seems excessive to me.

And yes......I am a biker too.
