Nasty crash this, but I can’t help feel a tiny bit sorry for the car driver (obviously much worse for the rider) looked like national speed limit and he was doing a touch over 60, clearly that’s not a bend you can take at 60 without more talent.
9 out of 10 times he would have recovered that a second later and got back on course with no harm done but now a guys in prison and ones in a wheelchair. I guess this is why Anna Sacoolas isn’t keen on flying back as she would be looking at longer inside

I have no clue how that happened (other than the obvious). Driver corners the car, doesn’t lose it, and simply drives on the wrong side of the road with zero attempt to correct his position. Very odd.

I think he steers left to try and correct, but he also starts braking just before the apex and the car understeers into the right lane. As he passes the apex and feels the car drift to the right he's fully on the brakes. You can see the nose dive and the back end start to drift out a little.

Had he not slammed on the brakes, he might have just made it around that corner but with a strong chance of losing the back end over those bumps.

No you don't, PC Carson. I ride every day in the summer and I rarely do. More than one prat(t) in that story.

It is a bit victim blaming isn't it.

Florian Pratt failed to read the road, and then having spotted the motorcyclist didn't steer to the right to avoid it.

Do BiB motorcyclists get Airbag suits?

Very different but agreed, moment of entertaining oneself without being excessive resulting in very serious consequences for other folks.

Do you ride Nottingham?

They’re permanently at it. I see it as a ready supply of livers and kidneys. Utter pillocks on their bikes as well, riding worse than any I see with appropriate gear on that stands a chance of keeping them alive!

Guessing he didn’t know the road as the corner tightened more than he expected, if he had known that road he would have slowed or positioned himself wide to enter into the corner without under steering, whilst speed might have been a factor I think it was more a case of not knowing the road

Both bike and car seem to have scrubbed off lots of speed before the moment of impact which was obviously helpful, as was the airbag suit.

The statement "hit at 70" is a lie, although I am sure the dash cam footage must show high speeds leading up to the impact.

Mostly a case of not knowing what he was doing.

Can't believe people have any sympathy for the driver.

He would have been better off to just ditch the car over the embankment. Poor reactions by the driver!

Looks nasty for the rider, one reason I refuse to use a bike.

I'm not sure a car would have been much better in this event. Considering the closing speed the injuries described are surprisingly non-fatal. Head-on between two >1500kg cars at a closing speed approaching 100mph might have been fatal for both drivers.

As someone doing their motorcycle training this hits home quite hard.

I read the article yesterday and there does seem to be a lot of focus on the rider and being negative about motorbikes rather than the guy that clearly cant handle a performance car.

Total failure to read the road ahead.

You could almost, almost say the driver had a chance to avoid the bike in the split second before impact (by driving right off the road). More than likely he froze, the sudden realisation of what was happening and nothing more he could do than stand on the brakes.

Shouldn't have been on the wrong side of the road is the simple answer.

Interesting that the driver had no previous points or convictions, unusual for a dangerous driving case. Either he has been very lucky before or this was an uncharacteristic lapse.

F=m*a

A common misconception that two cars travelling at 50mph is a 100mph head on collision. It’s a 50mph collision for both cars as they decelerate from 50mph to 0.

Regarding this crash.....really poor driving. The car was nowhere near understeering. If he had tuned the wheel more, it would have made the corner, but a lack of skill/training/experience meant he clearly has no feel for the car. When asked to brake ‘as hard as possible’ studies have shown that many drivers don’t press the pedal hard enough. Many think around 0.3g is ‘as hard as possible’ and don’t realise they’re only using 30% of their braking capacity. The same is true for taking corners.....it’s why so many people coast around roundabouts at 15mph

Based on the clip alone I do have some sympathy for the driver, albeit a small amount. It was a stupid mistake and he wasnt driving particularly quickly. Life changing injuries for the rider isn't good at all.

I can't help but think there was more of the dashcam footage leading up to the accident that contributed to the sentence. Note another car following was quick to pull over.
