As per a couple of other threads, I need a decent-sized family car, and thing an estate is the way to go.
I’m already considering an RS4 or six, or E63, but given my recent propensity for changing cars so often it might made sense to get something cheaper instead. While flipping through Autotrader estate car adverts I noticed that there’s a Golf R estate which ai should probably consider.
I’ve a test drive organised, but would welcome people’s opinions from here on them.
The interior looks decent if not opulent, the boot’s pretty big, and I can probably get a decent one for £25k, compared to £55k for an RS4 or £65k for an RS6.

How about an alfa 159 Q4? They are really cheap at the moment (mostly due to the tax!) but you get a 3.2 V6, 4WD and possibly the best looking estate out there. Plus its an Alfa which is very PH!...

These two will depreciate at a lower rate and bridge the performance gap between these types of estate & the RS4/6 you've been considering.

Unlike some of the others above I hated mine. First and only car I will ever buy without a test drive, I thought all the review hype would mean it was a great car.
The rise is really choppy and as a result anyone with a propensity for travel sickness did not find it a nice place to be. Lots of random electronic issues, such as warnings for handbrake issues and low coolant. It replaced a Renault Mégane sport and compared to that in terms of driving fun the Golf is way off the mark. Yes launch control is amusing, but show it a corner and it is not playful unless you are willing to be a complete hooligan.
Have a good test drive and your views may differ.

I’m going to keep the SL at my place on the continent, where I work in the week, and want just a single all-round car here, to de-complicate life a bit.
I went for a look at the new RS6 today, and it’s a bit big, so it’ll now likely be the Golf or RS4.

There's a brand new R Estate in Lookers Preston for £32999. I bought my hatch at 9 months old for £26k.
I'd say, as others have mentioned, take a good test drive. The estate is a very different animal and the hatch isn't exactly the first word in handling. They are though exactly what many of use want, capable, quick and well equipped.
I'd also suggest you don't pay too much if you do go for one. Prices are all over the place and they tend to lose a lot in the first couple of years.
Depends what you really want, they aren't that big inside and there are more characterful cars around.
