Best car for 20k budget for use with work - Page 1 - Car Buying

So looking to get new car and wondering what your thoughts are for a used car around 20k?

I do around 20k miles a year and currently drive a 14 plate Golf 2.0 which I love but need to trade up to keep value whilst mileage are within selling window.

Been looking at upgrading golf, BMW 3 series or Audi A4. What’s your thoughts ?

- The only thing I have found with the BMW is the inside seems less modern than my current Golf 14 plate which is abit strange.

Would appreciate your thoughts?

Seeing as you love you current Golf why not buy a newer one?

Seeing as you love your current Golf and the sole reason your wanting to change is you are wanting to keep more value in it to sell.

Put it this way every time you buy at £20k your losing money. You will lose less if you carry on using your current car.
Is there anything wrong with it? When did you change the discs pads and tyres last? Ideally you’ll be wanting to offload it with all that and it coming up for an MOT and service then you’ve maximised the value out of it.

Thanks for the responses. ZX10R NIN Thank you so much for your detailed response as so helpful - all these cars I have been looking at recently so just trying weigh out what is most suitable. Those Audi you put up were so nice.

I am only upgrading as my current golf is on 67k miles and 5/6 years old so wanted to sale while still good value on it. I have to have a car less than 6 years old for a company car.

What’s your thoughts on this 3 series:

I do wonder as I liked my Golf so much would a natural move be to an Audi. The 3 series has not got the dynamic cruise control on many models which I find strange.

That one's not bad but the xDrive models come with SE suspension & some people find it a bit disjointed, here's a rwd one:

How do you mean disjointed ?

The ride can feel floaty & at times choppy (the M Sport xDrives come with SE suspension) if you get one with adaptive suspension this does mask the issue.

So I tested an xdrive today with out m sport suspension or adaptive suspension and felt fine to me!? Not sure when you would notice the difference I.e how you drive it before you would notice

It doesnt matter what we all think. Go and test a few different types to see which you prefer.

It does make sense, but if I was in your position then I'd be asking your boss nicely how firmly this rule is kept to as the savings would be considerable. A personal plate could make it look a lot younger if your boss was willing to bend the rules a little.
