Bit of a random one, but...my materials lecturer has told us that the eutectic point is at 0.83% and around 700 degrees celcius.

[b]I[/b] think that's the eutectoid point, with the eutectic point at around 2.1% and 1,100 degrees celcius. :read:

Do any of you clever beans know for certain which is correct?

You arse! Now i'll have to find my notes. My immediate thought was 693, but i think thats copper aluminum :/

723 is the eutectic temperature. 0.8% is the eutectic point. The 2.1% point you are thinking of is technically part of a peritectic stage. However, without finding said notes, I can't say for certain what the definition is, as I did this well over a year ago.

T'was Callister that confused me! Seeing as hypo-eutectoid is < 0.8%C and hyper-eutectoid is > 0.8%C, it'd make sense for the eutectoid point to be inbetween them and the eutectic point to be further along the percentage range. The lecturer said the eutectic point was in the middle of the eutectoid range though...

Completly forgot about callister! Standard reading eh

Found solid mech notes..cant find microstructure notes for official verdict yet.

You got it. In the diagram E marks the eutectic composition, while S is a eutectoid i.e has the properties of a eutectic but occurs in a totally solid region.

Hypoeutectoid - composition poorer in carbon, hyper = richer
