Anybody here have Asthma?
Discussion
As a child, I had severe asthma and as I grew up, It got better however I’ve still been mildly asthmatic for few years now, only crops up during the summer when there’s high pollen levels as I also have hayfever and that triggers it. I never start coughing though, I only wheeze and have difficulty breathing in the evenings and as I’m asleep, or when I wake up.
My mother isn’t very well and needs lots of medication, she has a monthly prescription which includes the blue inhaler/reliever things which I was prescribed a few years ago but I haven’t been back as I have an unlimited supply and I use those to help me breathe. She doesn’t use them as much which is why I have loads.
Lately, the past few months, my asthma has gotten worse, I find myself wheezing all the time and I’m trying to figure out why.
I would go to the GP but I don’t want to waste the NHS’s time and resources as every time I’ve been over my asthma, I get prescribed the same thing.
Without fail, every night, when I’m asleep, I wake up being unable to breathe and it’s only just started to happen.
To the people who are ashmatic, did/do you go through this/ Shall I book an appointment with the GP or shall I carry on as I am.
Thanks in advance

My mum (now deceased - her breathing just failed) has asthma from the age of about 10 and used an inhaler often.
I started with hayfever in my early 20's, also became seriously alergic to cats.
the hayfever got worse, I ended up with a three year course of Piriton injections (this is the 1980's) and the hayfever slowly faded. i don't suffer now at all but about 15 years ago started having occasional breathing difficulties which was diagnosed as asthma.
I use a "brown" inhaler which is classed as a preventor, supposedly once or twice a day, but in reality I forget as often as I remember. I carry the blue inhaler which is a reliever but have never had to use it.
I suggest you take a trip to the docs' they will have a dedicated "asthma" nurse who will check you out and prescribe as required.
As for it coming on at night, an allergy to something in the pillow or duvet? Duck or goose feathers?
Or some sign of sleep apnea?

I have mild asthma. I control it with a daily ‘red’ inhaler (symbicort). Since using it daily for a number of years now, I’ve not had to use a blue inhaler or had any attacks or anything.
I started off at a fairly high dose but am now at a single puff of a low dose every day.
Go to the doctor!!!

Oh my god how can I be so STUPID!! I just realised after reading the second post
My parents got a kitten a few months ago, and I’ve just effing realised it’s the cat!
I googled the typical symptoms of being allergic to cats and the only ones I have is the wheezing.
It makes complete sense however I find myself wheezing at work, randomly throughout the day/evening.
The blue inhaler just about helps but it comes back.
Do I still need to go see the doctor? Is there any medication that counteracts the allergy. The cat is more or less family now

I’m 26 and my asthma became a thing in my early 20’s too. Define ‘seriously allergic to cats’ I started with hayfever in my early 20's, also became seriously alergic to cats.

My pillow and duvets fine, the only times I used to have trouble breathing is during the summer and it would mostly be at night, when I’m asleep or when I wake up.

Exactly my experience, Symbicort works extremely well for me.I started off at a fairly high dose but am now at a single puff of a low dose every day.

Personally I am OK with cats, it is house dust that is my trigger, the mites probably. Not sure how you get around the puss if it is the trigger in your circumstances, probably the saliva? Change of clothes and shower when you get home?
Defo see a doctor, never mess around with breathing when inflamed airways can be dangerous, my doc would rather send you away with nothing but advice if it is genuine rather than see you in A+E (his words). My inhaler was recently changed from a 2 to a single solution but doc says it is the same drugs though cheaper to manufacture I suspect.
We cleared out carpets, everywhere, stairs and landing and most rooms apart from the guest rooms (wood floors etc. now) .Bought a hoover that has an excellent dust filter on the extract, better choices now for that.
For a few years I tried bed covers and pillow covers that are mite proof (not bed bugs!) but didn't make a difference (everyone has them). Boots sold them at the time. Though I still hoover the mattress often and with a wood floor the dust is easy to hoover up from all the corners.

Go get a check up. I am asthmatic and had similar symptoms for months. It was not asthma related it was an irregular heartbeat causing fluid on my lungs overnight. Not saying this is what you have but sometimes it's not the obvious thing. Similar to you had mild asthma as a child that came back a few years ago. Was allergy tested and it’s the cat. Looking back, it cleared up in childhood after the family cat was run over ...My parents got a kitten a few months ago, and I’ve just effing realised it’s the cat!

Take an antihistamine every day and use a preventer inhaler morning and evening.
Got a bit lax with it last year and ended in hospital, but since then have been more diligent and had no problems (think I’ve had to use the ventolin (blue) once in 12 months).
Your GP should be able to prescribe you a suitable antihistamine dose.

Surely though with Asthma OP you'll have an annual check-up at your GP - My GP asks me to have one every year around the time they invite me for my free flu jab (which I never have incidentally).

The Blue ventolin inhaler is only a reliever, you need to get a ''preventer'' ..
Get to the doc's....
This. As an adult my asthma is very mild (compared to when I was a kid); for years I made do with just a Ventolin/Salbutamlo/Blue inhaler, only neding it once or twice a week. which I thought wasn't really a proble,.. I finally went for an asthma review and the nurse explained that I should be using a preventer (Clenil/brown inhaler) and should rarely need a blue inhaler. Since then I have been using a brown inhaler every night before bed and only use the blue inhaler if I have a chest infection.Get to the doc's....
I was told off for not using the red one every day as prescribed but then on the peak flow I am usually 700+. I forget I need it. Though with a cold it drops to 500 or so, that is when the continuous use would benefit I am told and would be blowing higher with a cold. Also helps reducing damage.
The new inhaler is a preventative and the twice daily.

As I said in first post, and others have underlined, you need the preventor (brown one Clenil) not the blue reliever.
WRT Cats, some were worse than others but two in particular were Siamese. The owners knew of my problem, would remove them from the main part of the house a day before I was visiting but still I suffered. Started about half an hour there, a tightness in the chest, then pains and an itch in side my body I couldn't scratch! Then breathing became laboured and the wheezing.
A problem I had with cats was they seemed to sense my discomfort and if I called on friends with a cat, the cat would make a bee line to me and try and crawl on my lap!
Last time I suffered was a B&B about 4 year ago. They had a cat, which they said never went in the bed rooms. We went to bed and within half an hour it all started. I ended up on the cold tiled bathroom floor struggling for breath. I eventually regained a modicum of control but I was seriously considering spending the night in the car outside the B&B.

Would suggest going to the doctor as there have been a few new products which hit the market in recent years which have really helped me.
I’ve had really bad asthma all my life, and up until last year I was on ventolin and some brown steroid inhaler which I took twice a day. Was using ventolin 4-6 times a day and seemed constantly wheezy. Happened to see a different GP who let me know about a new preventive which you take once a day, called relvar. It’s transformed my asthma and I no longer need my ventolin daily. To say it’s transformed my life would be perhaps over stating, but dropping from 4-6 time’s a day to nothing is a massive change.

I was recently diagnosed with Asthma, at 44 years of age.
For the past 18m or so I have picked up every chest issue going round, had coughs that just didn't go away, it came to a head at somepoint in October/November last year with the worlds worst cough and I was always out of breath, my peak flow was down to 150 at one point, but generally was around the 300 mark.
I am now on the brown preventer; 2 puffs twice daily and have the ventolin just in case, since it being diagnosed and now manage, my health has been a revelation.

I will definitely get checked as I always feel like I have phlegm that I can never clear, almost every morning, would that be the same as fluid in the lungs that’s caused by an irregular heartbeat? Edit...jist saw the cat post!! Go get checked anyway!!
