Currently on an iPhone X and looking to bail on iPhone.

Primary reason is the camera on the X is just not as good as I hoped.

I fancy trying Huawei (not a pro, a smaller one, maybe the normal P30?) but I want one with dual sim card slots.

The dual sim card slot ones aren't available in my market (North America) - is there a downside ordering a model for the foreign market?

Should I be looking at other models? Don't think I want a wrap around screen, don't want a bloated version of android, do want a phone on the smaller side (not loads bigger than the X).

FWIW my last android phone was a HTC Desire in 2010, which I liked a lot but at the time of my upgrade got an iPhone 4s cheaply.

closest experience to iOS will be Pixel devices there cameras are decent and the software that controls them even better. Down side is as far as I'm aware there is no dual sim version.

best option would be a oneplus device if you really want dual sim

It's worth looking at the Huawei sub brand, Honor. Can personally recommend the Honor 20 Pro. Dual Sim, decent build quality, 256GB storage and a very comprehensive 4 camera array with a 48 megapixel main shooter.

If you want to go smaller, then the Samsung Galaxy S10e is also a fantastic choice.

Pixel 4's have e-SIM capability, so as long as one of your networks supports it, they all do dual SIM (one e-SIM and one physical SIM). Been looking at one for work, but not sure if you can have multiple work spaces like you can on the Huawei to help separate out work from personal.

I went from an XSMax to a Pixel for the camera.

I lasted 4mths and now back with an 11.

While the pixel experience was fine there were too many compromises I was making and the 11 camera provides as good shots as my pixel did.

Multiple user accounts. Keeps work and personal stuff totally separate on the device, and has been standard on android for a number of years. On Pixels you can change from one account to another from the dropdown quick toggles menu.

What were the compromises?

RE the dual sim I have a UK sim and a Canadian one that I'd like to run together. I can trial a device on one of them before deciding whether to jump ship or not.

I think that’s going to be beyond my budget.

I will most likely buy a used device and I can get a P30 for around $4-450, say £300.

Password management (all in safari)
Notes (we have shared across family Apple devices)
Calendar (as above)
Email mgmt (really struggled to find a good email app for personal email, and needed to use outlook for works emails)
FOREX tracking (very few decent simple aandroid options)
Loss of wireless charging (didn’t realise how much I used this)
Lack of waterproofing (again didn’t realise how much around water I am)
Android auto (remains poor in comparison to CarPlay)
Loss of Apple Watch / poor android compatible alternatives

The phone itself was great and I couldn’t fault it and value wise was top notch. Being a very much ingrained Apple family though meant I was having very convoluted workarounds which weren’t sustainable in the long term.

Loss of Apple Watch / poor android compatible alternatives - I've got a mechanical watch haha

iPhone 11 Pro has eSIM capability which would give you dual SIM - and the camera is pretty good.

Trust me when I say, you’ll be back.

We did the jump and lasted all of 6 months before ditching and going back to iOS. The whole android experience just felt disjointed and bulky.

None of that jumps out as things that would effect me. I wouldn't buy a non-waterproof phone or one without wireless charging.

The thing I think I would miss is face time as all my family are on iPhones, but we all use whatsapp too so I am not sure that would be an issue in reality.

My friend has a Pixel 4 so going to have a look soon.

Those google solutions are great if everyone is using them. Being the odd one out that was never going to be the case at all.

The handset I had (3a) is neither waterproof or QI

This wasn’t posted a reason the OP shouldn’t move, it was a response as to my reasons moving to android didn’t work out for me, others will have more mileage in it and great for them.

I did wonder if you had bought a 3a as was pretty sure all the Pixels since 2 have been waterproof except the 3a.

Yeah not looking to go for a budget phone. The Honor ones mentioned before don’t have wireless charging and aren’t waterproof so no good for me.

Make sure whatever 'foreign market' phone supports the frequency bands that your proposed service provider uses in North America - there's regular discussions on Reddit about importing handsets to the US and often they don't cover specific bands as they're not produced for that market.

That's fair enough. Thanks for the clarification.
If everyone else in your circle is using apps locked into one particular ecosystem and you move out of that ecosystem where those apps aren't available that's a personal decision, not necessarily an evaluation of another platform/ecosystem/device.
As pointed out above, the iPhone is/was priced at 2.5 times the unit you chose to move to, so a different class of device which again wouldn't be directly comparable.

And this is the tripe that really annoys.

Yes there is a massive financial disparity but hardware and performance wise for all aspects of what I want / need were matched between the 3a and XSMax - the camera was the biggest concern but the 3a actually outperformed the iPhone I’m both low light and bright conditions
