Just assume I have been given 1000 quid and a message that I can only spend it on an engine upgrade. 4.0 L, 25k miles, excellent condition, which has already: new HT leads, distributor, coil, plugs, radiator, hoses, belt, startermotor, battery etc.

Was thinking of ACT trumpets and a tornado chip (14cux). Would you consider me crazy? Any other ideas?

Smooth bore intake hoses and air filter, trumpets (not sure if they make much difference) and a Joolz live remap session. And lots of petrol smile

Dispose of alternator 100 Amp in-line fuse and rewire alternator in a fashion so as to know main alternator supply can't short out to anything

Cost approx 10 pounds

For a 4L I would go for:-

Clive Y piece
Smooth Bore elbow
Performance air filter

Then off to Joolz at Kits and Classic for rolling road session

If you could get them to give you a bit more, well double then have a emerald ECU fitted. By far the best upgrade I have done and I have done a few.rofl

I bought my sag off Clive F; the quality of his work is exceptional. I don’t profess to be a griff expert but the manifold is a work of art; it also sounds a good idea, after fitting, to go for mapping by Joolz or someone nearer to you.

Sadly 1000 pounds doesn't get you anything useful as a power adder, there's just too much restriction in the engine as a whole (small intake manifold, small unported heads, small capacity) .. you either have to spend 300-400 pounds or 3000 pounds plus ..

300 pounds gets you ACT's full intake fitted (elbow to plenum and pipework to the filter, and a new filter) .. this is probably the best value you will spend initially. Spend a hundred pounds on the dyno fine tuning the distributor position and leave it at that.

Anything else is really not going to do much extra unless you go big valve ported heads, more capacity, forced induction etc.

So my advice would be .. buy the ACT intake pipes, tweak the dizzy on the rollers, and buy lots of petrol and have fun.

The full induction pipe work from filter to AFM from ACT is a good mod. Cooler air and crucially a nice aluminium connection piece that replaces tthe poorer flow rate of the original bendy hose as it goes through the wing to filter. I think this increases air speed as it’s simply a smoother and more direct bend before carrying on to Afm.
My induction roars more put it that way smile
