Keep Current or Get a new Car? Dilemma

Hi All,

I am in a bit of a dilemma at the moment,
I have owned my MK5 Golf Gti for a year now and it has been my first hot hatch and first petrolhead car in general only being in my early 20s
Since owning it I have really enjoyed my journey with the Gti being fairly reliable, never letting me down and mainly bringing a lot of joy hooning down the B roads,

Since I have purchased it a year ago I have done the following: New Turbo,Coil packs,Spark plugs,Interior refresh,Boost gauge,sun strip and few other little tasteful mods.

My question is, lately I have been really drawn to looking at and studying Toyota Mr2 Roadsters you know, The MK3,
I have got to a point where I really want to get one with low miles and special edition and keep it, However at the same time I am very reluctant on getting rid of my GTI. I love the car and don't want to get rid however at the same time I would love to have an MR2, So I am at a point where I am not sure whether to keep modifying my GTI for the next year or not due to my Dilemma.

Anyone got any suggestions or ideas or anything at all to say ?

GTIs are good cars but there are a multitude of cars out there which have the potential to put an even bigger smile on your face, I say do it.

I think generally in my early 20’s (probably in the mid and late 20’s as well haha), generally speaking if I got an itch for a car that needed scratching then I generally just went on and did it.

When it comes to cars, I’d generally never be against trying something new.

Worst case is you regret it and wish you hadn’t done it. And in that case you can always go back and get another mk5 GTi again, plenty of them about to pick from

Yeah I am really tempted on doing so as MR2 has been my dream to own since I was 14 I would love to get a low mileage 2005/06 plate in the special red edition and hold onto it, but then again at the same time I only had my GTI for a year and put a lot of time and effort and money into it and I do really enjoy it too.

So it's a hard choice to make haha

I think once you have your heart set on another car you need to make the change. Modifying further may take away the thoughts for a little while but it won't last.

I have managed to put myself in this position with my current second car (was a daily before). Now i'm sort of stuck with it as it's been modified which would only appeal to a VERY niche market.

Yeah you're right, I see where you are coming from, the fact that I live very close to my work as well as I'm not bothered about the luggage space is another reason why I am at a position to be able to do this,

The only thing that I do not enjoy is listing the car and selling or swapping it, I think that is the least enjoyable and most frustrating part for me haha

I had one in my mid 20’s - 26k on the clock and ftsh. It was great and I sold it 6 months later for what I paid.

I do however much prefer MX5s having owned 2.... Go drive one, and have a look at MX5s too!

If you have enjoyed the practicality of a hot hatch, keep the a Golf.

If you only need 2 seats, try the MR2.

I do like the practicality of a hot hatch but realistically I do not really need it,
The most I ever carry with the GTI is my weekly shopping, Missus and occasionally Travel bag to go for a holiday ect but that can all fit in the Mr2 and I haven't got the need for more than 2 seats.

Yeah, you're right I thought exactly the same way I do like the look of MK2.5 MX5's a lot and they are also a lot of fun however the only thing that puts me off is the rust, I would love to test drive both MX5 and MR2 in the next few weeks and decide which one Is for me, I just don't know how to get someone to let me test drive without giving the impression that I want to buy it after the test drive haha, is there any alternative ways I could test drive some?

Have you looked at an MR2 mk3? If more than 1 person think struggle for anything else...

plenty of time for 4 seats/practicality when you're older with kids. Get the 2 seater while you can!

Yeah I know they aren't as practical as the GTI or even an MX5 However the storage behind the seats and Frunk will do me haha

I did the 2 seater thing in my 20s for several years with a mk2 mx5... get it done.

Plenty of time in your 30s and beyond for more practical cars.

Thank you all for taking time out to reply to my Dilemma,

I have realised that you're all right and being in my early 20s its perfect time for me to get myself an MR2 or an MX5,
I have listed the GTI up on carswapz and Gumtree as much as it pains me to see it go when it does, im looking forward to test driving the two and making the right decision,

And maybe later on in the future I will come back to the MK5 GTI's
And lastly after owning one I have to say they are as good as everyone says and I could recommend one without a doubt to anyone out there considering it.

You can fit a surprising amount in them if you pack in carrier bags. I’m 6ft1 and not slim and my friend who is 6ft5 and I managed to fit ourselves and our luggage and tent etc in one for a 5 day Le Mans trip!

love Mr2’s my mk2 is a proper weapon spitting out 450whp jdm turbo , I don’t see the Apeal of the mx5s myself but horses for courses .
