Trading in a BMW

I got a 5 series that I love 520d not the most exciting but ideal for me

looking to trade it in for something a little fresher

Mine is a 2016 with 65k ish miles FSH etc

I was looking at getting a 2018 with say 20k miles

Trade in value I've been quoted seem shockingly low

One BMW dealer quoted €15-18k trade in value - selling cars like mine @€23k - same year/spec and milage

I know the dealer has to make a living but this seems savage

Any thoughts, advice

Is it very highly spec'd I only ask because auto 520d M Sports with Pro Nav start from 15K all with less than 40k on the clock

With 2018's with the same spec starting from 23k I'd say you got offered a reasonable trade in price.

Don't? Why would you trade in a basically new car at a huge loss just to replace it with an identical basically new car for a load more money? Maybe I'm missing something but this seems like willfully throwing money away for no gain whatsoever.

I agree, keep the car that you already own.

Also agree...it’s a known quantity and if it’s not chucking up issues why go to the expense of swapping it? A low PX value means that they probably don’t really want it.

I look at cost to change. If you look hard enough you might find something that suits your budget to swap over.

I'd probably keep it a bit longer, however you obviously want to use the equity in your current car, something I've been guilty of for the last decade.

I don’t think it has anything to do with BMW.

Trade in values are always shocking. If you want a good price for your car I’m afraid you have to sell it privately with all the hassle that comes with that. When I come to change my BMW it will be going up for sale privately. Not much looking forward to it but I’m not prepared to take a rock bottom price for what is a really good car.

Prices here are way higher across all cars mixture of tax, currency, extra costs etc but yes much more expensive here

Thanks all for the advice. You are right of course it is crazy to try and trade up so quickly and I live the car I have. I thought I was being sensible by changing before equity falls too far.
