Background; I'm a 19st 9lb guy, need to loose weight, mainly for health benefits, my Mrs has been on slimming world and lost 3 st, so I agreed to go, all very positive, eating all the right things, staying on plan, then, first weigh in - in my first week I gained 3lbs.

So, binned slimming world off, just started using common sense - lost 6 lbs, feeling motivated I decided to get a day pass for "The Gym" (24 hour place - pin entry etc) - got up at 6 this morning drove 1/2 hour to this gym, got there and the pin doesn't work, no human support till 8.

Which leads me to my next question, is it worth it? All signs point to the fact its easier being fat, and however much I want to try to loose some weight I just keep getting knocked back.

Sorry if i droned on, I needed somewhere I could vent.

Being fat and being fit are two different things.

Sorting your diet made you lose weight - which is great!

Going to the gym will make you fit but only slightly contribute to weight loss I think. It's good for the mind, body and would though so don't let one set back stop you!

The world is your gym, and its free. You could have saved that 30 mins driving and stayed in bed, then gone for a run instead.

Drive a 1/2 hour to the gym!!! WTF.

Get out your door and walk briskly to start with or cycle.

Stop or cut down alcohol if that's your thing.

Borrow a friends dog to take out.

I'ts not easy, I'm fat too!

From your post you do seem to give up easily.

What's your diet like? Eating and drinking clean with 1 cheat day in the week will make the biggest difference.

I was you 3 years ago. I went to Weight Watchers lost a ton of weight and joined a gym and got strong. (Well as strong as a 40 year old ish bloke can)

Yes its worth it
No it not easy in the slightest

Weight loss is not linear, some weeks you do everything right and put on. You need to track over time and make sure its coming off.
I don't do slimming world so I can say but WW worked for me and has various plans based on what you like to eat. So for example if you are gonna weight train you can do WW purple plan so you can stuff in as much chicken and lean meats as you want.

Oh and don't be the "cardio" only guy at the gym. You're a guy, it doesn't work. Learn the big lifts like bench, squat, deadlift, do those and get strong. It'll burn a ton more calories than trying to run on a tredmill and will not destory your knees.

You're right, it is easier being fat. I'm fat. It was very easy (and delicious) to get here.

sliming world works.....

you put on weight what did you do wrong....

bike, cheap as chips, its there, hate the rain? exercise bike in front of the telly.... any spare time exercise, doesn't need to be hard baw breaking sweat blinding.... just get that heart rate up and sustain that for a length of time.

Food - read up on the slimming world process its all in the speeds and free food, you can bulk up and not feel empty. portion control and snacking.... stop eating the bad food and enjoy. snacks you don't need to stop but the kebabs and greasy calorie laden food needs to be moderated.

if you keep the spent calories more than the consumed calories your body will eat its calorie store, which is the body fat.

Sorry, should have said - the gym is near my work, so made sense to use the gym there.

[Cool starey bra]
Me and the misses stufed our faces over xmas. She put on about 8lb (had a face like a smacked arse) and I lost 1.5lb much to the discrace of the entire WW class, It was nearly pitchfork time.

Why? Simple, I didn't gym train those two weeks. When you have a decent amount of lean mass, its actually hard to slam the weight on. Your body will burn it off pretty quick even sitting on your arse. That and the fact no gym ment no creatine so some of it was water weight too smile.

Sensible post. One note, watch the knees regardless.

It is really hard to get fit and lose weight, but it's curve too - the more weight you lose the easier it is to move and burn calories. Also once you get past the initial slog and get into routine I've found it's really beneficial to my mental health. Good luck and keep going!

This is why i wanted to go tot he gym to use the weights then finish with some bike time. Seems like the odds are stacked against me, I'm not making excuses, but when i physically cant get into the place I tried to go it really sucks balls.

Try not to get disheartened, you can definitely do it! Just stick with what's working for you. As for the gym, definitely sack off that money draining waste of time. If you're just looking to lose weight, it's 90% diet, just try to do a little more walking or some form of exercise you enjoy a little bit more. I'm overweight myself and making a big effort this year to shift some of the timber as I've got a 3 year old boy and want to make sure I'm around to see him grow up and be able to kick a ball around with him as he gets older. I'm trying the 5/2 diet, seems to work well for me as it means other than 2 days of hardship I can still enjoy food on a reasonably normal level. I've put on a stone (on top of the few extra I was already carrying around) over the last year and I can definitely feel a negative effect it's having on my health.

Eat a bit less and walk three miles a day, do this for a few months and I guarantee you'll lose weight.

Those saying it's not easy, it really IS that easy.

It's easy now. Later in life though, with diabetes, arthritis and heart disease? Not so much.

Do you have showers in work? Before joining the gym, I'd be creating good habits. The gym can come in time, but just getting out of bed that bit earlier and packing your work clothes is a habit that can start with you just going for a walk (and eventually a jog) before work.

Right now, it's easier being fat. But the clock is ticking. The extra fitness and strength will pay dividends in the future.

Sounds like you're looking for an excuse. Gym was locked, hardly a reason to bin everything off- st happens! Have a walk instead, the gym will be there tomorrow.
