Quick query on the above.
Employer is introducing the above for various lengths of service.
I left firm A to join firm B, headhunted, and subsequently firm B and firm A merged 14 months after I left firm A. Small world, don't burn bridges and all that. I worked my entire notice, beyond it in fact as I.T. dept locked my account at 5:45pm on my last day. I was going for a pee at the time and couldn't unlock to continue! So... I'd consider myself a good leaver.
Anyway - I enquired to HR whether those new long-service awards would apply for me given my tenure at the original firm which has merged with my current employer.
However I've been told that given I resigned there was a break in my service. What are the views on this? I literally had a few days off after finishing as it was a big birthday and started the very next day, took no employment elsewhere in the meantime, handed the P45 to Firm B from Firm A.
Am I asking too much for 12 years prior service to be recognised, or do I not have a leg to stand on? Thoughts welcome!

seems perfectly fair to me, you left the company, the fact your subsequent employer got taken over is irreverent. Having said that it is likely that if you had been employed by company B that subsequently got taken over you would be entitled to a long service award. put as many years on as you want. Make it big. Feel the respect of your peers flow in.
just get them to engrave the words "Not an actual award" in tiny font to cover the legal aspect.

25 years at my place last summer, what did I get, a certificate, not framed or anything, printed off on the work laser printer! 
The company that owned us before this company took that one over did at least offer a selection of something from a catalogue. What I didn't know at the time of selecting my item (for 20 years) was that it was treated as a BIK, at whatever value the company decided it was probably RRP, and tax deductible so I ended up out of pocket for something I didn't really need that much

I received my second long service award last year - 20 extra days holiday which have to be taken in a single holiday, plus some spending money - we had a great time travelling around Malaysia for a month. Only 3 more years until my next one, happy days.My dad's long service award in the 70's: Overnight in a hotel in Blackpool, with my mum. Big presentation "do". Everyone brought up on stage individually to be presented by some bigwig and then invited to say a few words (presumably about how wonderful the company was).
Dad's turn comes along and he is presented with a matching set including an onyx cigarette case, onyx table cigarette box and an onyx cigarette lighter (did I mention it was the 70's?). When asked to say his piece, dad said "I've worked for this company for 25 years .... and none of you b
ds know I don't smoke!" and left the gifts on the stage as he walked off.
When checking out of the hotel the following morning he discovered that the company weren't covering the hotel costs and he had to pay for him and mum .... he was less than impressed!

I'll get a £500 gift when I make it to 20 years, and then again at 20 years and also at 25 years. Has to be a tangible gift, rather than cash.
Also in the anniversary year at 5, 10 and 15 years you get an extra couple of day's holiday in that year, and after 20 years you get a permanent 5 days extra leave per year to take

£50 voucher and a paperweight at 5 years.
3 course meal with others of the same start year, a number of free drinks and a slate coaster at 10 years
£2500 long service bonus and 2 extra weeks holiday for that year at 15 years
£5000 long service bonus and 4 extra weeks holiday for that year at 20 years
£7500 long service bonus and 6 extra weeks holiday for that year at 25 years
I'm fairly happy with it but it only just changed to that, prior to that there were share options which were much more lucrative!

Holy Crap. That's good. We get a choice of techy gadgets but nothing as big or good as £2,500 as at 15 years which I'll be coming up to in 2021.£50 voucher and a paperweight at 5 years.

Aye can't complaint, previously it was 250 shares at 15, 500 at 20 and 750 at 25.The share price is around £23.00 atm so a bit of a financial difference but there were valid reasons to change it and share prices go down as well as up!
