Cheap Jag - which one?
Discussion
Recently I've been tempted by the X-Type, not sure why but I'm in a position where I could run one for a year and get rid if I don't like.
I decided to expand my search to the S-Type as well, but I do prefer the X.
Which are the engines and gearboxes to avoid? Which ones are the good ones?
I don't really want the complication of AWD, but I'm not fussed about petrol/diesel or mpg, I'm more concerned with reliability and maintenance.

The answer is to go for the best FWD version you can find locally but I will say the S Type is the better car despite it's looks & you can get it in V8 form:

Or if you're feeling brave S Type R

Should post in the Jag forum
X Type is fine the diesel is a good work horse and the petrols are fine but they are not a "proper" Jag in the eyes of most people and sold poorly because of this. For low running costs this is a good way to go.
S Type. Pre 02 are not as good as they have the old Ford gearbox (Auto) and the trim quality etc. is not as good. Go Facelift post 02 which have the ZF six speed box. The V8 is great but expect higher costs in running. Watch for rust and issues with the climate control which can be expensive to sort. Late model diesels have dpf which can be the cause of major engine issues.
XJ get a proper one. X308 V8s are fine and very reliable. Use independents for servicing. Watch for rust!! A proper Jag for peanuts money
XK8 You can pick these up for buttons money. Still look way to expensive yet you can buy good cars for £2k Same as XJ real jag but do rust.
Read the buyers guides You can still buy a cheap proper Jag for low money and run on a shoestring. Just remember if soething serious goes wrong scrap and buy another

Depends what you are classing as 'cheap' but I'd have a S over an X.
