Not sure what to make of this, but my feeling is that it was all a bit of fun & he shouldn't be axed:

The biggest concern is that The Simpsons has been st since about series 12. Before that its simply untouchable.

The whole show should have been axed long ago, not just Apu.

But back in its glory days Apu was a perfectly fine character. A stereotype of an Asian storekeeper to be true (just as most of the characters were stereotypes of one thing or another) but always shown as a decent sort and they did have a few episodes that fleshed him out a bit more. Like the time he needed to get US citizenship.

Oh for Christ's sake all the characters in the Simpsons are caricatures.

Groundskeeper Willie, with his feral behaviour, red hair, exaggerated Scottish accent. I'm deeply offended - not.

There's probably some "extremely richer than yow" serial fantasist offended by the Mr Burns portrayal, maybe even another poster on here.

Expired? Dont be daft. They remove the date with hairspray and sell at full price.

Surely progress is good, we shouldn't rely on stereotypes and at the least ask questions about what is right. Even on PH people use race to pigeon hole stereotypes, and stuff like this only reenforces it.

I’d dearly love to have Smithers release the hounds on certain denizens of NPE smile

Ratings must be falling, make a fuss and get people to watch what’ll happen.

Could you bring back Alf Garnet on TV today?

Could you introduce the Major off Fawlty Towers today?

Times change.

I'm not an avid follower of The Simpsons and I doubt you'd ever introduce Apu if you were writing a show today but maybe rather than simply dropping the character how about use the character to promote some positive stereotypes?

Seems a little weird if you simply say "Rather than promote this character in a positive light we'll just ditch them".

Just a thought.

They didn't say they were ditching the character, just that Hank Azaria won't voice him in the future.

The Simpsons turned into utter garbage after season 8, it's time they just canned the whole thing.

So the intelligent, educated hard working Indian with a loving wife is, to you, not a positive role model?

How so?

Not really what I said is it?

Whenever I've seen Apu it's been a piss take of the stereotypical corner shop owning Indian with the funny accent.

The voice actor, '' freely admits that his impersonation is “offensive”. Of the process behind his casting as Apu, Azaria explains: “Right away, they were like, ‘Can you do an Indian voice and how offensive can you make it?’ I was like: ‘It’s not tremendously accurate, it’s a little stereotyped,’ and they were like: ‘Nah, that’s alright!’”

It made people laugh 20 odd years ago, nowadays it seems a bit trite.

Well I wouldn't go that far. Still some gems in the next few seasons after S8. After about S11 or S12 it became unwatchable on that I do agree.

I think you could argue its funny today, being funny does not always mean not being offensive its the key to humour understanding context. As Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervise have said many times they make jokes about rape an cancer it does not mean they think the victims of such things are to be mocked but the subject matter can be used for humor.

To quote a Car joke 50% of people surveyed said they enjoyed rape....its clever (a little) does it mean he thinks rape is funny of course not. If we become so woke we can't mock things then we really are in trouble.

Then maybe you should have a look at some of the episodes where he features more heavily, in which he’s very much a strong positive moral character. Pau’s one of the few characters that is nearly always shown in a positive light.

Those 20+ year old episodes are still on the TV daily, and they're still entertaining. I dont think I've watched a newer episode.
