I’m looking for some help with choosing a laser printer for a small/medium business.

The main requirement is to print from a web based software that only works on Windows 10/Internet Explorer 11. The job is sent as A4, the printer driver will be set as A4, but the media in the printer tray will not be A4. The printer should print the job and not throw up a paper size mismatch error.

We’ve had a few printers, some print this with no issue. Others however, will not (you’d either have to cancel the job, press a button on the printer to manually tell it to proceed, or the printer will resize the job and any resizing isn’t acceptable for our purpose).

Consumables for printer that currently works are getting expensive and I’m trying to get our cost per page down. We do around 5000 pages a month per site across 5 sites.

I may consider one machine that can handle multiple media types easily in different trays, as we also use other strange media sizes.

What size is the paper in the printer tray?

Is there any reason you can't actually just set up the paper sizes to be correct?

Seems illogical to be sending documents sized as A4, to a printer that thinks it is loaded with A4, expecting it to print onto different sized media without making a fuss. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you are trying to do.

The vast majority of printers I've come across will allow you to input a custom size for the media you are using. Some will be more limited than others and how it is done will vary depending on the drivers.

We've used A2 and A3+ printers in the past for previewing A4-spreads so that we can include the printer/calibration marks, and then write notes around the spread for the typesetters/designers.

I don't think that's what the OP is trying to do though. Sounds like the document size is preset to A4, being sent to the printer as A4, with the printer being told it has A4 loaded, but actually has smaller media loaded into the tray and of course, the printer is throwing up an error due to a sensor noticing the difference in size and probably assuming there is a jam.

In your case, even though you would have been printing something intending to be A4, you would still have been printing an A3 document onto A3 paper in a printer that knows it has A3 paper in it.

I'm sure there are some printers out there that wont have sensors to actually check what size media they have loaded and will just rely on the operators input, but it's not something that will be advertised.

Without knowing exactly what the OP is actually trying to achieve, it's hard to come up with a work around.

I can't change the way the job is transmitted from the software. It's a niche/quirky industry

This exactly. Some printers firmware allows for the job to be printed.

An A3 Printer may do the trick.
Print with the Paper sideways (most A3 will do this) and it shouldn't complain about the length.
210mm is the Width of A4

A lot of Printers only accept Custom Sizes in the Manual Tray.

Maybe have a look at Oki.
They used to be very flexible with media. Not sure on the current offerings

You could speak to Printerland or Printerbase for advice.

If the media is 210mm wide and 180mm long, then I just did a test on my Samsung laser which seemed to work fine.

I cut down some A4 so it was shorter (around 180mm) and put it in the tray, and adjusted the support to hold the paper snugly and printed a test document from Word ... Word document is in A4, as is the printer driver. I put the resultant print into the tray for the image:

The tray is still set to A4.

Printed fine with no errors from the printer.
