Penny for your thoughts?

I am looking for an upgrade to my OP3... though not too urgently as its just about ok. But I kinda don't want another OnePlus, I kinda don't want a Samsung, I kinda don't want a Huawei etc.

I find myself drawn to oddities like the LG G8x with its second screen in a folding case and the narrow Xperia 1/Xperia 5 range.

Has anyone got one of the Sony's and doesn't mind airing the laundry about it?

I've a Sony Xperia nott one of the latest , it's about two year old, maybe more.
Took it in preference to a Samsung as it had more storage onboard

TBH its ste, poor reception against other phones on the same network and is now locking up regularly.

If you watch a lot of Netflix etc the screen ratio makes great sense, plus you get more scrolling area for browsing.

I had the top of the range XZ3 about nine months ago, returned it as it had a screen issue with red tinge, the replacement was even worse! And there was no fast charger supplied, had to bloody buy one myself. Ended up buying a secong hand Pixel 2xl.
My only Sony prior to that was a Z3 about six years ago and it couldn't display reds properly, they were all the same vivid hue regardless of shade and that got returned too. Both handsets got bummed up for their cameras but they really weren't that good compared to the competition.

Hmmm food for thought.

Not read anything show stopping. Think I need to find a store that actually has one to play with.

Shame LG have fallen out of favour here? We don’t seem to get their best offerings.

Yet LG still do quite well in the States? And they hands down make the best phones for audio/music quality.
Have you had a gander at the Pixel 4xl? Second hand prices are plummeting on them already, I saw a a less than two weeks old 64gb version going for £470 the other day, they're still £829 on the Google store! Stonking camera and the software experience is excellent.
Samsung have 'mid range' S10 lite and Note 10 lite variants due soon, the former looks really good provided the proposed specs are what the UK actually gets?

I've got an Xperia 5, really happy with it, the aspect ratio is a waste of time, and took a little getting used to. (Might be tiresome if you have smaller hands)
Good spec, reasonably priced and it's not gigantic- it's exactly what I wanted in a handset.
No issues with reception I've noticed on this one.
They seem to frequently do good offers with free PS4's/Sony WF-1000XM3's to sweeten the deal. (I got the latter, for pre-ordering)

Samsung's are not for me I don't think. Certainly not what they give us with their Exynos chips.

But barely used 4xl is a good shout. I had not thought of that. That might be the winner.

I did nearly go for one because they had the headphones deal on their own store. But then I saw it was like for the first 75 purchases or something and when you got through to the payment screen there was no confirmation that you'd be getting the buds. So didn't bother.

Interesting you find the aspect ratio a waste.... It seems quite useful for reading given the extra height. Do you think it is maybe too narrow?

I'm with you on the Exynos offerings we get but it's been mentioned the S10 lite will come with the SD 855+ whereas as the Note 10 lite will be Exynos?

I'm rather curious to see just how good the new SD865 chips are going to be, looks like a big step forward on the previous version with regards to camera/graphics performance (can support up to 200mp sensors and the new Samsung sensors are 108mp with fancy pixel binning to improve images - only any use if you're in to mobile photography I suppose?)
The older OG Pixel xl and 2xl are terrific bargains currently, saw a mint OG xl go for £70 yesterday, its out of support now but one of very few phones running Android 10 (bought my Mum one for Christmas from the kids for £90) and mint 2xl are going sub £150 - mine does far more than I need and runs very slickly indeed, and it'll receive Android 11.

I've got an Xperia 1 for my work phone and I struggle to fault it - the aspect ratio means it is on the large side, but it means it is entirely possible to have two windows on the screen at the one time (say Chrome and Email) and they remain useable. It was upgraded to Android 10 before Xmas and will get 11 when it arrives - Sony are usually one of the first to upgrade these days, believe it or not.

Battery life is pretty good (2 days easily with my usage), camera is pretty good (the Cinema Pro app is excellent) and it hangs on to Vodafone's dodgy attempts to provide signal better than my colleagues with iPhones.

Only negative I've found is that you need deep pockets to physcially fit it in due to the form factor, but as its my work phone it normally goes into a jacket so less of an issue for me.
