Hi guys, I'm a Mechanical Design Engineer in the central belt of Scotland. I graduated in 2013 and I've been working in a few different industries.

My current workplace has had several rounds of redundancies and I'm finding there isn't many other job options out there. I'm starting to debate where and what my future career looks like.

I was just wondering if anyone had moved away from design engineering to a job more on the tools or field service work or something else.

Any advice welcome, I'd rather look at changing careers than moving location as I'm settled with family now.

Cheers beer

Woods and Parsons in Belshill / Glasgow seem to be doing OK, we're losing lots of contractors (as our managers decided no IR35 full stop) and staff to them in O&G work but also Grangemouth refinery and chem plant support work (not sure if that is Woods themselves or now the bit of Woods that was sold to Parson a year ago).

I know it is a bit quiet now at Rosthyth now the aircraft carriers have been built but the submarine decom should be kicking off soon, thought there would be mechanical work there.

We've also lot a few mechies to the rail industry at Polmadie. Having said that, we're also seeing a lot from the tyre plant closing at Dundee - is that where you were from?.

Keep your eye out if you are near East Kilbride and the Hunterston reactors shut soon. EDF aren't like Sellafield / Magnox with a load of government money to keep pushing decommissioning out, especially if one reactor is working on the site but not the other. No doubt they'll be trying to persuade the NDA that fuel route improvements are for decommissioning to take all the final fuel out at a faster rate than ever happened when the reactors ran, but the (English quango) the NDA wll probably tell them it is their [Scottish] problem and they need to get going themselves, so as usual they'll throw money at the problem. Whomever are Strachen and Henshaw these days (reactor crane people) will be recruiting then I'd guess.

For some daft reason, our Scottish recruitment is run from our NW England office so that is why I see all these CVs, yet look over Preston a couple of days a week!
