Never bought a car from FB before, what can possibly go wrong laugh

Single train ticket in hand, only a two hour trip in the morning and hoping to find this;

Advert pic obviously not recent but I'm assured it hasn't changed. Needed a cheap rust free mini truck that could tow and not a ratty old diesel. This is the quad cam 3.5 V6 version making a heady 200bhp and as the kids have long gone, the SWB seemed a good option. Seller has been happy to talk about the good and bad.

Much cheaper than eBay or AT options so we'll see!

I had one of these but a diesel. Was warned off the GDi. Both petrol and diesel suffer from fuel filler pipe corrosion which sends rust into the tank and blocks the filter and pump. I think they put a plastic pipe on later...worth checking.

The GDi cokes up like a miners lungs.

I'd heard about the fuel filter and as for the coke, we'll see if an Italian tune-up on the way home is needed smile It's certainly not done a lot of miles.

A chum of mine is on his 3rd V6 and even living on the Isle of Wight at pottering speed they've survived, it's been the salt that's killed them.

There was a specific Mitsu injector cleaner but once the valves are 'baked' it might be require some dismantling and cleaning.

Well so far, my faith in humanity and FB is restored!

Arrived to find car as described (better in fact), was given a full walk around, a great wad of paperwork, original manuals, both remotes plus original master key and a basic oil service kit waiting to be fitted. He'd even washed the original 'Warrior' carpet mats for me plus made sure there was enough fuel in it for my 70 mile journey home.

It drives as expected like a truck but trundles along quite happily at motorway speeds, even the cruise works.

The interior is unmarked, not bad after 90,000 miles!

So all in all and 70 miles down, it seems like a good call. Can't help thinking that with a bit of effort with the advert and photos, he'd have done a lot better than the £1600 he took off me!

Can't argue with that for 1600 quid! I had a diesel LWB and it was a good drive, quite carlike compared to the Landcruiser Colorado that I had before it. As above, injector system blocking was a known problem on the petrols - I seem to remember the filters were much finer than most designs so bunged up easier.

Seems like a good car for the money. Enjoy, but make sure you change the filters smile

You sound like you've been there with these so dare I ask..........from a bit of Googling I gather there are three - one in tank, one micro behind the engine and another one buried around the intake. Have I got this right? Thanks in advance.

Quick update as two weeks/500 miles in.

Roped into everyday duties as eldest son needed my daily Audi so watching the fuel gauge move faster than I'm used to. Everything seems to work well although it's been a bit of a slow turning starter.

Had a free Sunday so removed the tacky dash cam, air fresheners and steering wheel cover. Installed a DAB radio and Parrot hands-free, just love Japaneses cars as everything comes apart so easily with no MENSA skills required.

Had budgeted for new tyres and chuffed to have bagged a set of tidy 17" Shogun wheels from the 'bay with hardly used General Grabber AT2's for £200 the set, that's an unexpected saving of about £300!

However.......and there's always one of those, booked in tomorrow for cam belt, service and fluids change. Parked outside the office today and it refused to turn over. Took the weak option and called the RAC who arrived in 20 minutes and immediately diagnosed a duff starter/solenoid. Hot wired it to get it going and delivered it to the garage a day early.

Call from the garage to say new starter motor ordered and they'd pulled off all the undertrays. Each bolt covered in copper grease and so far, all fluids coming out are spotless. Also not a jot of rust found anywhere. Someone has looked after it despite no history in recent years.

Fingers crossed no nasties found as they dig deeper but I'm starting to get a good feeling about this one!
