Alternatives to a BMW 535d Estate?

We're thinking of changing the functionality of our household cars - currently my wife has the family car and so it really doesn't matter what I have.
We're thinking of getting her a small EV, so I'll need something practical. We're quite an active family and are regularly carting 4 bikes and various camping equipment round the country in addition to the dog. A BMW 535d MSport Estate circa 2015 ticks most of the boxes for me. I've looked at the A6 BiTDi, but it seems a fair bit more expensive for an equivalent vintage car.
Is there anything else worth exploring?
The Merc's seem to have lower powered engines, which don't appeal and I'd worry about big bills on a 4x4. Budget is around £20,000. Power is more important than gadgets to me.
