Hi all

Need some advice on tyres for some 17inch style 68s alloys that I’ve had sitting in the garage for 10 years

Tyre size are fronts 225/45/17
Rears are 245/40/17

Car does 3k a year , as it’s not our every day car , just the family mtb bus, had enough of the mv1s , had the car 10 years and lost count of the times I’ve had to have cracks repaired, and tyres replaced because of splitting , And I’ve replaced the rear alloys twice ! So as the mv1s are in great condition at the moment from being refurbished in 2019 and the rears tyre are due to be replaced end of month for mot , I’m gonna save them for summer use

Any recommendations then for 17s tyres don’t want budget, just a good midrange uniroyal rain sport I’m edging towards at the moment

Ov already mentioned the tyre I’d go for, the RainSport 3s are superb tyres, the 5s are just out too. Have a look on Camskill to see what prices they’re able to offer (you just need to get them fitted locally for £beertokens) wink

Others I consider, having owned them and found home to be very good, are Nexen N’fera SU1s & Vredestein Ultrac Vorti’s thumbup

I didn't realise cracked rims was such a common problem with MV wheels on E46 until a couple of months ago when someone I know had a rear MV2 wheel split on his E46 Touring.

I thought cracked/split rims was only really an issue on later BMWs running 19" wheels with run-flat tyres!

I had Pirelli P Zeros on my E46 (on 17s) and really liked them, but I've read some positive things from people who have fitted Vredstein Ultrac Vortis.

But really you have to go with your own experience/instincts - what others like might not suit you!

I use Goodyear Eagle F1 or Continental Sport Contact (5 I think) on my 68s.

Currently on F1s.

I’ve used the Vreidesteins, they work well but wear fast. I’ve used the Unis on an a non E46 and they wore very rapidly. Whilst the Vreidesteins are cheaper if you calculate the cost per mile I’d imagine they cost the same as the Goodyears. The Contis and F1s also look a lot better than the Unis and Vreidesteins.

^^^^ Wot 'e said.

Cost to buy isn't the full story.

I have used many mid-range brands before & always end up going back up in price & costing less over the period they are on the car.

Goodyear EfficientGrip have a decent amount of rim protection rubber, if that is important. Their rim protector seems to run vertically, rather than just a triangular piece sticking out.

Sorry, can't comment on the current range but I've used Kumho (KU31s) and Vred (Ultrac Sessanta) before and been impressed by both.

Looking at Blackcircles, fitted prices for the 225/45R17, Uniroyal Rainsports are £83 (£85 for the XL). I notice the Goodyear Eagle F1s are £85. At 245/40R17, Rainsports are £112, Goodyear Eagle F1s are £113.

If I had the choice between the two at around the same price I'd go Goodyear tbh.

Just got my first set of Falken FK510 for my Style 68's. 225/45 from Oponeo & 245/40 from Camskill.

£270 all in and luckily they were delivered together today. I've always been a Goodyear F1 chap, interested to see how these are compared to the positive reviews.
