Golf R

330d Shadow edition, lots of kit and looks very menacing in black. You could get a 335d but will have more miles and will be older at your budget, not much between them other than the lack of traction on the 330d.

Golf R is a good option but would be less economical, and if that isn’t a problem, I’d seriously suggest a 340i!

Leon Cupra, cheaper than a Golf R, more standard kit and looks great esp in the more practical sports tourer version.

Had mk7 golf R. Then m140i now 335d.
If you're looking sporty and family then the golf R is great. You will get a much fresher one than a 335d.
Not sure I would call the 335d sporty to be honest (had it 26 months now). It's fast but it's still a diesel. Not a huge amount more economical either then my golf R was.

M140i is a bargain and it's quicker than both. Boot slightly larger than golf R boot as well ( golf R boot smaller than normal golf).

The only thing I would say is that if your going to have 2 young kids it's a very tight squeeze for baby gear in a non estate golf size car (that's why I had to get rid of the m140i.

The Polestar & CLA45 would be my pick if you're looking for a Golf sized car & the A7 would be my pick from the next size up.

Interesting comparison. I've seen the 335d with the aero pack and upgraded wheels looks sporty to me and a nice car.

Would you recommend the 335d ? Diesel doesn't massively bother me as long as its not costing ridiculous amounts of money, I get approx 30mpg currently so don't mind that figure. As for price and year, the 335d are around 20k for 2017 model the Golf R is around 22k for a 17 model (facelifts). Never been a fan of 1 series shape so the m140i isn't of interest unfortunately.
