330d Shadow edition, lots of kit and looks very menacing in black. You could get a 335d but will have more miles and will be older at your budget, not much between them other than the lack of traction on the 330d.Family friendly hence 5 door, baby on the way (decent boot space is needed)

Golf R is a good option but would be less economical, and if that isn’t a problem, I’d seriously suggest a 340i!

plenty quick enough and handsome, 440i just over your budget (23k) but makes an epic all rounder.

The 430d GC is a great shout. Practical and smart looking...plus quick and economical. I fancy one myself! https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

At 10k you're borderline for a diesel but I also realise that this limits your options:
V60 Polestar You'll have to haggle hard but you can get very close to your max budget:

RS3 Sportback but it'll break your four year rule though

If you're looking sporty and family then the golf R is great. You will get a much fresher one than a 335d.
Not sure I would call the 335d sporty to be honest (had it 26 months now). It's fast but it's still a diesel. Not a huge amount more economical either then my golf R was.
M140i is a bargain and it's quicker than both. Boot slightly larger than golf R boot as well ( golf R boot smaller than normal golf).
The only thing I would say is that if your going to have 2 young kids it's a very tight squeeze for baby gear in a non estate golf size car (that's why I had to get rid of the m140i.

Interesting comparison. I've seen the 335d with the aero pack and upgraded wheels looks sporty to me and a nice car.If you're looking sporty and family then the golf R is great. You will get a much fresher one than a 335d.

Would you recommend the 335d ? Diesel doesn't massively bother me as long as its not costing ridiculous amounts of money, I get approx 30mpg currently so don't mind that figure. As for price and year, the 335d are around 20k for 2017 model the Golf R is around 22k for a 17 model (facelifts). Never been a fan of 1 series shape so the m140i isn't of interest unfortunately.
What about an M Sport + 340i with Pro Nav
