Hi. I have an oil leak just below the rocker cover gasket on my BMW X5 E53 m54 engine 3.0i petrol. It seems to be coming from around a sensor. Can any advise if there is a common leak around this area. I have changed the rocker cover gasket as that’s where I thought it was coming from. Any info would be great

It’s around the exhaust crank sensor area just below rocker cover

The M54 is famous for oil leaks via the cover gasket, spark plug gaskets, bolt gaskets & oil filter housing gasket.

Clean the oil off with carb cleaner & dry it off, run it for a day or so & pinpoint the leak.

The gaskets are an easy enough diy to replace, need to make sure that the rocker cover isn’t cracked or warped also (check with a straight edge & also a bright torch to check for cracks) thumbup

Elring are OEM gaskets IIRC and use Febi Bilstein for the boot gaskets. You can find the necessary part numbers via RealOEM (put the last 7 digits of your vin number into the box at the top of the page & it’ll bring up your exact car). Search eBay for your parts & buy via BMWmotormec or C3BMW smile

Many thanks. I have cleaned off the oil and will go for a drive to see if I can see the leak. I have already replaced rocker cover gaskets and spark plug gaskets. The leak is on the front of the engine but not near the oil filter or alternator mounting bracket . The leak seems to be below the rocker cover. I’m hoping it’s just the o ring on crank sensor
