First reports of the upcoming Dune films have emerged and it's sounding promising.



I am a big fan of the original film and the sci-fi fiction by Frank Herbert (about the fight to control spice production on the planet of Arakis) is an even better read.

Any fans on PH? If you've been left disappointed at the last batch of Jar Jar Abrams movies, this may well fill the void.

Yes! I read all Frank's books as a teen, loved them. I saw Dune in the cinema with my parents...they left halfway through, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Of course, it's a David Lynch film. My favourite scene is with Paul Atreides... "THE PAIN!!!!".

Yeah really looking forward to this, I still need to read the books! They're on my list for this year, it's just finding the time...

But I love the premise and the cult following, and having Denis Villeneuve tacking it, who IMO did a fantastic job with Bladerunner 2077, bodes very well.

Yup, he's mad about it and he been working on the storyboard for years, which in itself in apparently incredibly rich in detail. I hope that they do it justice, it'll be incredible.

Ref the books, I've only read the main one - that's the one that I'd tackle first.

Loved the book and the movie. Books did go a bit downhill after the first couple though IMHO

I knew they had finished filming. There will also be a standalone TV series, (Warner??).

I would like to hope this will do it justice but the books are very convoluted to get to the screen and get bums on seats. I would have preferred a limited episode TV series. But looking forward to these.

(Edit. Herberts son makes a right mess in the writing of the later books in my opinion).

I'm quietly and cautiously optimistic, given how well Denis Villeneuve did with Blade Runner 2049.

I agree. The books got progressively worse until the final book that I read jumped the shark with a terrible Deus Ex Machina.

My initial thoughts:

- a slight mid characterisation of Baron Harkonnen

- the use of a popular song in Dark Side of the Moon threatens to capitalise cheaply on the cult pop culture element of Dune's following (though obvs they want to attract as many viewers as possible)

- they've touched upon two key elements of dialogue in the movie with the 'pain' and 'fear is the mindkiller'

- the worm looks awesome

A nod to the legendary (but never made) Jodorowsky Dune which was to have been scored by Pink Floyd (who at the time were recording Dark Side of the Moon, from which the original song heard as a "cover" in the trailer is taken.

It'll be interesting to see how it tickles me since I know the book and original film inside out. I can't help loving the Lynch version even though It's a failure. The casting is perfect. I presume Paul's fightback is where they plan to start the second installment.
