A friend has had to get her phone "unlocked" by Apple for some reason. This involved sending them proof of purchase and whatnot due to not having iTunes available at home. They told her that the phone would be "as new". Does this mean the stuff she hasn't backed up to iCloud will have been lost?

The whole point of having itunes (aside the music) is when you plug your iphone in it backs it all up. You can then change phones at will and restore from phone to phone.

Appreciate that but her laptop recently died a fiery death so no other option.

The phone should backup every 24 hours once connected to power, locked and on wifi as long as they have enough storage available on icloud.
Once you sign into the new phone, you should be able to restore from an icloud backup.

This is a sore point for many users. Apple give you a pitiful amount of storage (5Gb iirc) and many users are simply unwilling to subscribe for more so don't get backups not realising how much they can/will lose.

Oh, I know. I pay for 200Gb to cover the family. Bit lots of people believe they've paid for the phone so they should get infinite free stuff for life

But there's nothing stopping you doing an encrypted back up to a PC/Mac.

Agreed but iCloud (as noted above) just happens overnight when most people charge their phone. I'd not back up every day. I doubt my wife would even back up every week. With iCloud it's basically constant. The cost is low, the convenience is high.

unlocked by apple... does this mean as in she wants to change mobile provider? If so, then she could have easily done this without wiping the phone...

No, not a network unlock. The phone has locked her out. Or summat like that.

Even on an iPhone, install Google photos, unlimited automatic backup of your photos. Then you only need the precious iCloud storage for contacts etc.

I do this on my Android phone, Photos into Google Photos, Contacts into Google Contacts, Apps into Google Drive. Music is all streamed so nothing to backup.

After lots of messing, she's finally had an email from Apple saying that the "activation lock" has been removed. Is it simply a case of switching the thing on now?
