Go for a Discovery 4.
Yes if stuff goes wrong then they can be expensive. Disco' and RR will be about twice as expensive to run as a normal car but go into ownership with an open mind.
You can find horror stories about most cars online if you search for them. Owners forums will provide honest experiences.
Wonderful machines and not much else like them (although a tidy MK2 VW Touareg will be worth a look)

Why bother? Just get a Landcruiser etc?
Hardly a looker! And the interiors are, well, Japanese. There are also plenty of people who’ve been left stranded by Landcruisers, so it’s not like they’re guaranteed to be reliable. You either win or lose with Land Rovers, there isn’t much in between, but I’d go for the D4 (hopefully with the 2014 facelift) with a Warranty Direct warranty that covers the crankshaft issue.
My D4 never had a single fault in three years. My D3 on the other hand....
For each person who's had no problems with their LR you'll find someone who's had serious problems. Don't for god sake listen to the pub expert who's never owned anything other than a 20 year old Mondeo!
I've owned 2 L322's, sold one with 180k on the clock with the most expensive fault being a gearbox ECU going that cost me £300 for a used one.
Current S/C is on 135k and has had no problems. I'd recommend the Range Rover over the Disco or Sport as I think they're just nicer places to be for a waft!
It's no different to buying any other car, do your homework, there's loads of info on the owners websites & go in with your eyes open. For your budget there will be some good cars out there with full main dealer history and one owner. Try and avoid anything that's had too many owners as there's a good chance it wont have been maintained. If you can find one that's had a gearbox service that's a plus too.
Find a good local independent who knows the cars and set aside a decent budget to run it. Petrol will cost you more to run obviously but the diesels do seem to be a little more problematic. You'll love it!

Personally I'm not a huge diesel fan and I've had both my petrol's converted to LPG so the cost of fuel really isn't a big issue.I've had the 4.4 petrol & 4.2 supercharged petrol. I've no direct experience of the diesel but I believe the 4.4 is far more refined than the 3.6
Whilst LR products tend to fall into two camps, comically unreliable or built like a brick s
thouse with nothing in between, there are loads of specialists out there who’ve seen every fault and knows the product intimately. Find a good one and it can take the sting out of rather pricey ownership.
