Getting things done FAST! Why can’t we?
Discussion
It appears China are building a 1000 bed hospital in a matter of days to deal with victims of the new virus.
Clearly this will be more akin to a military hospital than a teaching one you might find in the UK.
But it does beg the question as to why we take such an inordinate amount of time over things.
Motorway widening
HS 2
Cross rail
A third runway at Heathrow
A new school
Aside from the lengthy planning process, when these things eventually start they take a generation to finish!
I know China will have different rules and regs, but surely we can learn something from them and get infrastructure up and running quicker.
We need prisons. They don’t need to be elaborate. It’d be interesting to see how soon we could build a prison that was basic, safe and sound.
Could it be done in weeks rather than years?
Other countries do. Why not us.

Building regulations and health & safety. China can knock s
t up in a fraction of the time, but it’ll probably fail and collapse resulting in a huge amount of casualties in about 20 years. I’d rather we adhered to strict regulations, but it does hamstring us from a productivity perspective.

I imagine that in a lot of cases it depends how long you want something to last. If it is only required for a short period of time then we are quite capable of knocking something together. The July 7th bombs exploded between 8:49 and 9:47am. The emergency mortuary to handle the dead was built and in use by 10pm on July 8th.

No we don’t. We need a fairer society, an end to prohibition and a reformed criminal justice system. Norway has a much lower recidivism rate by treating criminality as a societal problem, and dealing with it as such. Edited by CrayonPark on Saturday 25th January 11:29
To be honest, if you are going to be able to throw tens of thousands of people at a building project, manage it, manage the raw materials etc you can build anything quickly.
A comedian I once heard say there is no level to what you can achieve if you just throw human lives and suffering at a project, Pyramids, US rail network etc etc.

If you are happy to work for 50p a day in appalling conditions with no regard to your health then go for it. Clearly this will be more akin to a military hospital than a teaching one you might find in the UK.

The Chinese can build a product every bit as well as we can here in the west.
Asian work ethic and collectivist mentality plays a large part.
At least our factories don't have jump nets for all the suicides.Asian work ethic and collectivist mentality plays a large part.
Certainly when my Dad was building coal power stations in China, they didnt bother and no-one knew where to send the bodies.
Mind you, security beat to death at least one person while he was on site.
Wild west.
