Not being a big fan of red, not taking a shine to flag mirrors and ideally wanting cup or turbo style wheels has limited my 964 purchase somewhat. I assume quite alot of the good condition 964's advertised get overlooked unfairly because of this attitude (then again it may just be me).:)

As my head says 'buy on condition' (as it should), what would be the cost of aero mirrors and a bare metal respray? Ideally changing the red to a more modern dark colour.

Anyone had this done?

Mirrors here:

295 quid plus paint plus vat plus fitting - maybe 500?

Cup wheels here:

As for the respray, personally I wouldn't do it, I don't think a colour change will add to the value of the car. I'd wait 'til I found one in the right colour to start with. Oh and I bet it would cost a bomb.

Oh, and I have no links to PorscheShop - except for having their website in my favourites ...

aero mirrors about £300 eg from Jasmine , full respray ( not 'bare metal' ) £2000 upwards , replica 17 inch cup 1 wheels about £750.
You would have to get a car at knock down price to make it worthwhile , and you might even be reducing the resale value by a different colour respray. There will always be 'hidden' bits in the old colour that a decent PPI will spot apart from the change in registration details. Not all 964s are red , advise patience.

Forget about a respray to a different colour, it will drive future buyers away.

If you want the right 964 model, in the right condition with the right colour AND with your choice of mirrors and wheels AND at the right price then prepare for a long wait!

Full bare metal spray, done properly, will cost a fair few quid, with all the trim/engine removal & instilation etc.

Don't consider if you are not looking at £6k area.

You are being far too specific on an old car. It`s hard enough to find a good 964 (or indeed any 911 of similar vintage inc 3.2 Carrera, 993 etc). To then put non esential hurdles in the way is maddness. I do it for a living and all my own personal cars are bought because they are lovely examples at the right price rather than because they fall into specific colour schemes. not only that but you are ruling out the very colurs that 90% of them were painted at the time.

If you do want the car colur changing then you need to speak to Mark at Fast Lane bodyshop in St Albans. The boy is mustard ! 01727 852147.

Failing that buy a car that was predominantly produced in the colours you want. BMW 3 series around 1997, Range Rover 1994-1998 or a 993 model Porsche 911 !

The best advise is to keep looking. It seems now that the vast majority of 964 have teardrop mirrors and 17" Cup 1 or 2 alloys. There are even some doing the rounds with 18" wheels, although not recommended by Porsche.

If the car is completely standard, budget about 3000 to have the suspension lowered (30mm), 17" Cup (i perfer Cup 2's), fit aero mirrors, a cat by-pass and cup pipe and a have a bloodly good service. All will be money well spent.

Therefore keep looking - it took me 6 months to find the my Satin Black C2 and I'm very glad I waited.

Also check out www.porsche964.co.uk - there is usually someone looking to sell a car.

3k to have it lowered....

costs for mine so far are ................

less than 1k fitted myself and aligned at OPC......

even the local specialists only wanted 250+vat to fit + 175 to align, and with online firms selling the kits for circ 1k....that leaves some real change.....

For some strange reason I found when looking for a 964 that most of the metallics like Sliver,Red,Grey etc were cars with a tiptronic gearbox....not sure why.

Because (a) accountants and solicitors are conservative by nature and (b)accountants and solicitors prefer automatic cars. I bet most of them had aircon too.

Wise words. If you want to increase your choice, think about looking further afield. It may feel like a bit of a hassle to drive a couple of hundred miles, but for the right car, a small price to pay in the long run.

Find the right 964 based on colour and condition for you.

If it needs the wheels or mirrors they are (relatively) simple to fix.

Travel as far as you have to, it'll be worth it.
