among the very last things he did was congratulating LeBron James for beating his NBA scoring record: https://www.bbc.com/sport/basketball/51254093
Very tragic indeed anybody losing their life especially so if other members of their family do also .... but am I the only one who wonders why this is top story on the BBC website ….. I hadn't/haven't a clue who he is..... other than now I find he played basketball in the US.
My post may come across as disrespectful ….. but that's the farthest from the truth. Its not meant that way

also it seems there has been quite alot of deaths caused by choppers lately. all from celebs/sporting people..
Many celebrities, high profile sports personalities, politicians, heads of state, and business people use helicopters extensively - often on a daily basis. also it seems there has been quite alot of deaths caused by choppers lately. all from celebs/sporting people..
It's unfortunate but inevitable that, when an accident does occur, it obviously gets a lot of attention. It's not usually the helicopter's fault. Mechanical failures are actually very rare, and most are a result of avoidable circumstances.

Its top story because he is very, very famous in the USA. On a level with the likes of Tiger Woods or the Williams sisters. My post may come across as disrespectful ….. but that's the farthest from the truth. Its not meant that way
Instrument meteorological conditions. Means you have no visual contact with the outside world and you fly by looking at the instruments.
Controlled flight into terrain. Means you fly your aircraft into the earth, however the aircraft is fully functional and often the pilot is unaware of their proximity to terrain until the last moment.

Early speculation is suggesting it may have gone into IMC and hit high ground - CFIT. Very tragic.

From this it sounds like the pilot was in IFR mode - I Follow Roads.Visibility was low enough to ground LA's police aircraft, so it kind of begs the question....
I think because basketball isn’t big at all over here it’s hard to get our heads around just how mega famous he is stateside. A 20-year career with the LA Lakers, winning five NBA championships and 18 All Star titles - and amassing a £450m fortune all before 40. Beyond that just seemed like a really good guy.
