External hard drive recommendations
Discussion
Hi folks, just wondering what external hard drives everyone prefer! Capacity would be around 2tb. Looking for something reliable more than anything else. For the purposes of this exercise it not iterested in NAS drives or special Raid configurations I'm just looking to provide reliable external data storage. Thanks

I have a WD Passport drive in 4tb guise bought from the WD refurb outlet it’s been perfect and is self powered as well.
Same here although only a 1TB one. Sits on top of my tower and backs up each night. Been working fine for a couple of years now.Edited by alorotom on Monday 27th January 13:44
Bought a couple recently.
One bigger (3.5") powered one, a Western Digital, 8TB, was a bit under £120 during Black Friday. Chosen as 8TB seemed to be the sweet spot for £/TB. So far so good.
Then bought a smaller USB powered one for an Android TV box I bought. Again WD, 5TB, think it was about £85, and again best value in terms of £/TB. Only want 3TB but the 5TB really wasn't that much more. Again all good with it to date.

Buy whatever catches your eye at a price point that you're happy with.
No brand is any more reliable than any other, hard drives are the ultimate white good.
I bought a cheap one from MyMemory for the wife, she dropped it and the case fell off, it had WD stickers on the drive inside. No brand is any more reliable than any other, hard drives are the ultimate white good.
...it still worked as well by the way.

I think these days they've got accelerometers in them, as soon as they detect a fairly extreme movement, the read/write head quickly moves out of the way of the platters.Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
