Depends on your insurance costs I guess as for young drivers the prices are utterly mental.
Worth considering a Twingo RS as you'd pick up a good one for £3k. Not as much power as the Fiesta but for being excellent fun and cheap to own, they're worth a thought. Old school kind of hot hatch.

Depending on your insurance then the Mito Veloce with various power outputs you should be able to find one with a sensible insurance number.

Seems the Volvo C30 may be cheaper to insure:

It's a Focus underneath and I think the 1.8 petrol is a Mazda unit.

I think times have changed mate, insurance companies are taking the piss nowadays!
when i first got my first car which is the one im driving Fiesta Zetec s they charged me £2100 for insurance! ( including a black box )- the insurer was Morethan smart wheels... what a mistake going for that company. was a nightmare of a couple of weeks! they black listed me on every insurance company for having black alloys! and they wouldnt give me back my cash... was looking around £9000 to even get insured with a blackbox insurer.
Until i told them i was informing a financial onwordsman they removed me from the black list , handed my money back and gave me a £50 gift voucher! the GOV need to do something about capping the insurance premiums because its getting beyond a joke with what they are getting away with

The govt needs to do something about idiots getting a driving licence.
Was just going to come and suggest a MiTo, I have a non turbo model and although not fast, its certainly a nippy thing and definitely a bit different and in the right colour wheel combo can be a headturner! plenty of good stock about in your budget

fair enough 17-20 year olds should get a slightly higher premium but not to the point they have to take a loan out from the bank??
17-20 year olds pay extortionate insurance because they cost insurance companies extortionate amounts of money. Premiums aren't based on spite, or prejudice against young drivers. They are based on statistics and maths. Travel insurance for teenagers is dirt cheap. For older people it can often cost more than the holiday. Have a wild guess why that might be.
4k I would buy a FN2, best all rounder I think.
Good points
Reliable
200hp
0-60 6.4
Lovely 6 speed manual
Great interior
Practical
Good looking and has aged well
k20 engine
Bad points
£325 tax
Thin paintwork
25 mpg
FWD/Understeer/No LSD until 2010.
I found my FN2 cheaper to insurance than my EP2 1.6 Civic.
