De-Cating a 4.5

Is De-cating a 4.5 Cerb an home job or for dealers to sort out? or can you trust your local ATS/Quick fit to do them?

Easy enough to do on axle stands. But you may need some spare bolts for the flanges, 2 of mine decided to snap rather than be undone.

Also, please be sure to use axle stands. Never work under a vehicle that is raised on a jack alone.

Easy to do, but fiddly working on your back - much easier to delegate it to a garage. Did this at the weekend. Also if you're running a sports exhaust you may find it a bit much - far too many pops and bangs for my liking, so I put the cats back on...

I did it myself, took probably a couple of hours on my back,but as said it was a bit fiddly.Local exhaust fitters said they would have charged about twenty five squid and in retrospect I should have had them do it.But she bangs like a good un now so mission accomplished.

Ok cool. I am considering De-cating first with the original rear system. Have a Tuscan S with CCC Cans on it and they are very loud, would like the Cerb to be a little quieter though. Will de-catting make enogh of a differance on its own or am I better off looking for a sports system and leaaving the cats alone?

Have decated my car with the std system and to be honest it's quite loud enough and the popping and banging is loud enough to throw horse riders at twenty yards.

I run a sports exhaust system on mine (from Joospeed - top quality bit of kit) with the stock cats and it is pretty noisy. According to Joospeed the best set-up for performance / soundtrack is said to be the stock TVr rear box with decat pipes. Plus you can save your cats for MoT time.

None that pass an MOT

Had to put the cats back in for my MOT today. Had them taken off again as soon as they where cool enough for the mechanic to touch them

Are all 4.5 systems the same, ie any de-cat pipes for a 4.5 will fit all 4.5's? or have there been any changes? Seen some secondhand ones for sale from a 98 4.5, mine will be an 03

The emission standards for cat equipped cars have changed for 2002 onwards, but before that they all have to pass a Basic Emission Test (BET) standard test.

BET limits are >0.02%CO, >200 ppm HC, 0.997-1.1 Lambda

If the car fails this limit, then there it goes on to a vehicle-specific full cat test. One of my friends (MOT Tester) is looking up the Cerbie figures for me, so I'll post that up when I have it!
