Trading Day Date for Daytona
Discussion
Just sounding out opinions on this one.
Advised by my AD that there’s a 9 year wait for a s/s Daytona, by which time I’m betting they’ll be the price of second hand examples today.
I’m now thinking of trading the 18ct Day Date against a 2010 Daytona (not a fan of ceramic bezel) and spend the next 9 years enjoying the watch. Much as I love the DD there are very few occasions when it feels appropriate to wear it. Consequently it’s in perfect condition.
I guarantee most on here know more than me about the watch market so I’d appreciate your views.
Many thanks in advance.

I suspect the Daytona will be a better long term bet than the Day date. I'd therefore say if you're going to wear it more, then do it. In fact, forget about the investment side of things and just do it - the Daytona sounds like the watch you really want.
Thank you for taking the time to reply Dolf, that was what I was hoping to hear ! Brads67 said:
God no
D/D is a lovely thing and the AD is talking pish about 9 yr lists.
This Rolex situation is becoming beyond a joke.
Keep the Day Date and buy a Grand Seiko instead.

I love the DD, but appreciate there may be a time and a place to wear it.
I would keep it and get something alongside it to ‘daily’ and wear the DD when suitable.
You can’t really rationalise these purchases though, so if you really want a Daytona, only a Daytona will do.

Swapping an expensive item you don’t wear for one you will sounds like the perfect idea to me.Thank you for your comments so far.
Some very good points have been made. Looking at the relative prices, adding the cost to change to the price I actually paid for the Day Date and the Daytona is costing me the current manufacturers retail price. I suppose this helps me to justify paying the premium on the Daytona, which is normally something I would be reluctant to do.
I only started looking at the option of changing when I realised what the trade were offering for the DD. I don’t really follow market values and trends, so it came as rather a shock.

I don't quite understand this statement. The current manufacturer's retail price for which piece (bearing in mind the Daytona 116520 is not current)? I assume you didn't buy the Day Date new? What is the cost to change? If you don't mind sharing your man maths? Somebody said:

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. The Day Date owes me approx £5k. That was the cost new, I’ve had it years, but it’s as new. I’m being offered more than double that as a trade-in. The cost to change will mean I’m paying approximately the current new price of a ceramic bezel Daytona for a 116520, which I prefer. Full set 116520 are generally between £15-18k through dealers. So let’s say the cost to change is £6k. Meaning the Daytona will owe me £11k (ignoring that £5k was worth much more years ago)
I’ve asked for opinions as I do love the DD, but the reason it’s in such good condition is that it’s hardly been worn. Ideally I’d like both, but that means waiting 9 years.
I appreciate all the feedback.

I love wearing my Daytona daily. I traded a Submariner date for it. Bought the Sub used for £1200 (that would have been back in 2000/01 I remember having just turned 30 and become a father for the first time). But I always hankered after a Daytona, so in 2010/11 I had the opportunity to buy a used one. I think I paid around £5250 at the time, and sold my Sub for £3000 so I had a similar cost to change.
I love the DD too, I guess it comes down to this: if you're not getting as much wear as it deserves, then trade up to the Daytona and enjoy it every day.

ks to waiting 9 years, get one now. It's also a much nicer watch, with better potential to hold value.
