Golf R swap

Considering swapping my MK7 GTI pp for the R manual, won’t be losing out on money etc just want to know if there’s really that much difference other than the power

To read some of the threads on here, the main differences will be with the R you'll wake up one night to find uninvited guests have let themselves into your house to search for the keys.. And you'll be accused of living on a council estate. I'd stick with the Gti, myself. Whoever you're swapping with, why do they want to..?

Personally I'd take a lightly fettled GTI over an R but as already mentioned, it all depends on your driving style and what you enjoy about driving.

The GTI is more "hot hatchy" I'm told, the R is a more relaxed drive with the DSG box, for sure.

No one has stolen mine in the last 18 months, so just ignore the auto-comment above. Unless you live in some northern sthole

Loved my gti pp

The R is heavier and isn’t permanent 4wd so most the time it’s just fwd like the gti but dragging extra weight around! If it was me I’d go for a clubsport S

Thanks for reply’s, hopefully test driving at the weekend. I do love the GTI, wheelhop through the first few gears is starting to wear thin however. It’s a dealer who’ll be taking my car, buying out my PCP with enough left over for a HP deposit

I went 7PP to 7.5R. Initially I drove GTI, GTI PP then R and picked the PP. The early 7Rs definitely felt heavier to drive than the 7.5R (estate) that I ultimately bought. Salesman did agree that early Rs felt heavier for some reason.

Other than the extra power and traction, the two are remarkably similar to drive. I used to enjoy the magic diff on the PP but the R doesn't need it.

I didn't regret changing, but I'd have been happy keeping the PP as well.

The R does put its power down with no drama at all from a standing start.

If you wanted to criticise it, no dram could be taken either way.

If I miss axle tramp and torque steer in low gears I get my mk2 Focus RS out.

The R is great loved mine.

But I was one of the unlucky ones owned a Mk7 GTi for 4 years got the R and within 4 months I had an attempted theft while we were in the house.

Sold it soon after and got an A4 but I’m now back in a GTi and all is still quiet.

Few people mentioned the added attention from undesirables, not something I really considered so thanks for pointing it out. Think the test drive will decide it for me cheers

It's not something worth considering. So make the decision on any other factor.

But if it worries someone then it is worth considering. And it's also a fact the Gti is more likely to be stolen than the Gti. So, it might not bother you, but it's probably sensible to consider and then decide if it's an issue or not.

The chance of OP's car being stolen at all - whether it's a Golf R or any other make or model - is very low. The increase in that likelihood, should OP choose an R over a GTI, is infinitesimally small.

Just saying it really shouldn't factor into a decision, but appreciate people do worry.
