Hi, bought my wife some Agnes Arber Rhubarb Gin at Christmas, she poured some and put tonic in but said it smelt of vomit, I thought she was being fussy but I smelt it and it did indeed smell like puke, which is a little off putting.

I took it back to the shop, a specialist beer/wine place in Bramhall, Cheshire, no refund or replacement was offered, they took my phone number and said they will look into it, I wasn't confident they were going to do anything and they have had two weeks to investigate but no phone call.

I paid just short of Forty quid for it, had it not been to her taste I would have probably drank it eventually but it smells really quite unpleasant, the lady in the shop sniffed it but neat it just smells of alcohol, it was only when it was diluted.

I have spent a lot of money in this shop as they do loads of interesting (and expensive) beers, I feel like they paid lip service and dont intend to do anything.

So what are my rights in this situation, not hard up for the money but its really annoying me, their lack of concern and the product being sub standard, it cant be good if it smells of puke. Could i get it independently analysed or at least sound knowledgeable about such matters with your advice. I really dont intend wasting forty quid as they dont give a toss.

I did have a look but wasn't obvious a bit more searching and I found the contact address and emailed them.

Why would it smell of vomit though ?

In ten years, quirky flavoured gins are going to be the abandoned thing at the back of people''s drinks cabinet on such a huge scale.

Gin is just flavoured vodka.

So flavoured gin is just flavoured flavoured vodka.

I quite agree and vodka is just a fancy name for 40% ethanol.

We have hit "peak gin"

Apparently rum is next but the lead time is a lot longer and process quite different to the gin "scam" so there will be fewer entrants to the market.

... best I've seen is "No Alcohol" Gin... so basically flavoured water... its wasn't cheap either!

Not had the brand noted by the OP, but rhubarb gin's very nice IMO. I have it with Crabbies and plenty of ice.

The trend in gins is highly annoying as the prices went up markedly...for those of us who drank the stuff before it took off, it just added to the bill smile

OP - why didn't you get the shop person to try it diluted? Did you leave the bottle with them? Did you buy it on a credit card?

Tried contacting the supplier, no reply.

I dropped the bottle off four weeks ago tomorrow, I rang after two weeks,

"We are just waiting for the rep to come in"

Rang them again yesterday,

"Still waiting on the rep, we have spoken to her and she says she is coming in"

The get a phone call back off another bloke there telling me it smells fine to him, so I pointed out it was when it was mixed it smelt, then it must be the type of tonic you used so I suggested that Fever Tree and Schweppes dont appear to offer a vomit flavoured tonic. Then he suggested it was the glass, well we tried two glasses and two types of tonic, the glasses straight from the cupboard having been cleaned in the dishwasher. The same tonic and a glass from the same cupboard was used with a different Gin and that was fine.

I get the impression that they really dont want to refund me or offer me a replacement, anywhere decent would have maybe tried mixing it as suggested, then perhaps just offered to refund or replace. A month so far after a complaint about an item under £40, I said I will ring back when I am off on holiday.

Its on my way home, so going to present myself in person, I suspect they will just come out with more cock and bull about reps.

I am not bothered about the money or the Gin really, just dont like being mugged off, they must make enough money out of the place to not need to treat customers like st, I have spent a lot of money in there over the years, they have a great selection but it is quite pricey, but wont be going again if they dont sort this out to my satisfaction.

Went in today, the owner got a bit arsey, not too much but quite sarcastic, but he eventually gave me a bottle of decent gin to buzz off.
