So in a great start to my day, I spilt my coffee all over my desk. Went to charge my phone and a warning telling me that charging has been disabled appeared, this being due to moisture in my lightning port.

Now, my phone is kept in a case so I know the coffee wasnt at a high enough level to seep in to the port itself so I reckon there had been moisture unbeknownst to me on my lightning cable which was transferred over when I plugged this in to my phone. It says leave it a few hours.

Do we reckon permanent damage, or it'll dry out and operate as normal?

I have googled it and there seems to be mixed reports of outcomes following this error appearing.

I’d guess that there are mixed reports because of mixed results following a variety of types of incident. Nothing you can do except wait.

It'll be fine. The waterproofing on the newer iPhone's seems to be very good. A small amount of water like that shouldn't give any issue. If anything, i'd try pushing a bit of tissue in the port or tapping the bottom of the phone to see if anything comes out and then try charging straight after.

I’ve been snorkelling with my 11 and my XS Max before that. Zero issues - just let it dry out and it’ll be fine.

If my iPhone gets wet, can I charge it?
If your iPhone has been exposed to liquid, unplug all cables and do not charge your device until it’s completely dry. Using accessories or charging when wet might damage your iPhone. Allow at least 5 hours before charging with a Lightning cable or connecting a Lightning accessory.

Have had it wet on several occasions and never encountered this warning so just wanted a but of public experience. Cheers!

The water can short out the contacts hence the device protecting itself. The contacts on the connectors are now so small shoving tissue in to dry things can do more damage.

I would use an air hand dryer to dry them out, much quicker.
