Not seen a thread on this, so apologies if one already exists.

Basically, MoTs in NI are carried out by the equivalent of the DVSA. Some vehicle lifts at their MoT centres were found in November 2019 to have cracks in them, fast forward to today & MoTs are basically being suspended for private cars almost all lifts are affected and repairs aren't being signed off by insurance assessors.

The latest development seems to be that vehicles with un-renewed tax due to a lack of an MoT certificate won't be prosecuted - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-512...

How on earth did this escalate so spectacularly?

When something is described as being 'Irish', things like this epitomise it.

Does anyone know which manufacturer made the lifts?

Or what happens when civil servants run something.

Buy a classic and loophole yourself out of the problem. We all want a classic and now the Irish have the perfect excuse!

I doubt that's the issue.

You can see that infrastructure in NI has been failing over the past few years. Government officers can only go so far. You need direction and funding - and that can only come from the ministers.

48 out of the 55 lifts showed signs of cracking. Unnamed UK manufacturer of the lifts which cost between £30k-£40k each. Suggested lead time of around 4 months to replace them all but only because they already have 15 in stock.

However, such an order would require tenders from elsewhere too as per usual red-tape regs. So it may be a while until this issue is resolved.

Make them get a ferry to the mainland for the test - surely they’re not insured if no mot or tax?

Four month exemptions being issued. Car still has to be otherwise road legal though in the meantime.
