Special constable doing it in their own time for nothing but travelling costs to and from the station from home address. They’re not paid.

I’ll have it that they’re using tax payer funded vehicles to do it but I’ve got bigger things to worry about.

Seems a bit of a non story to be honest, driver rightfully gets pulled and prosecuted, person ordering gets their takeaway.

I've no doubt if the Police didn't deliver they would somehow be criticised too so dammed either way.

I suppose the big question is - Do the Police insure their cars for food deliveries?? If not, then surely they are just as guilty as the guy whose car they have seized.

Despite the article not saying, it's clearly Uber Eats.

When we order an Uber Eats, 90% of the time it says the food is being delivered by bicycle - and then 90% of these are delivered by car. I've asked different delivery drivers why; they say it's because Uber Eats will want a copy of a valid car insurance certificate (presumably with business usage). So they put bicycle and deliver by car - apparently very little difference in pay.

Must be fairly common amongst a lot of takeaway delivery drivers.

I'm not sure they're insured atall
don't they have an exemption because it's basically impossible to get insurance on a car for policy activity that could include deliberately hit other cars?

Like most large companies with fleets, eg Royal Mail, the police insure their own vehicles, every vehicle has to be insured regardless of who owns it.

As mentioned, the police don't use an ins company per se.
They'd be fine delivering a big mac meal. In any case, when they're sitting around bored doing nothing I'm sure an order for a maccies coming through on the radio would be a public service and would break the ice amongst certain communities..

Yeah one atypical occurrence from volunteer officers voids any 'complaining' about resourcing.

Why dont the delivery place/company check this, most companies would not hire/engage with 3rd parties without doing the relevent checks. Even just to avoid bad publicity.

This is what I find most surprising. Local chinese/indian/pizza/kebab takeaway's delivery driver is one thing, but Uber Eats?

This Gig econemy fueled by migrants workers seems to be riddle with people who either shouldn't or aren't legal to drive.

Since the MD and KFC in town went Uber Eats its full of nutty moped and car couriers, who don't seem to be licenced and insured to do what they do.

The park like 'a'holes one routinely turns around on a pedestrian crossing near our macdonalds and then time I ordered from them the old BMW 3 had not MOT tax or insurance!
