European Emission Zones

I am curious whether anyone running a classic has been stopped/fined for running in an CritAIr or low emissions zone in France or elsewhere in Europe.
I tend to take a UK registered classic (as in over 40 plus years old) from the UK to the South of France at least once a year. Our French friends make things particularly difficult in theory by having each local authority applying a zone determine whether to exempt classics. So far I have just ignored the whole thing with no issue but as more and more zones are added to the network I wonder whether I should start paying more attention.

We took our 1982 VW camper to Vendée a couple of years ago.
As there is no Euro emissions standard for the vehicle., we could not get a Crit d'air sticker for it.
The whole Vendée region is impacted, so if the pollutants were high, we would have been banned from driving. I checked when it was last enforced. It had never been enforced so we went with no issues. On the outside chance we could have been stopped and a 130E fine.
We are doing the same again this year.
Last year we went into Paris for five days, so I took my 330i instead, as I don't think my camper would be allowed inside the Periphique during certain hours. It just depends where you are going. From a high level view if you are going into cities you might run into issues otherwise you should be okay.
It is not the easiest thing to understand and my interpretation may be wrong. But so far I have not been caught or questioned even on the autoroutes.

More and more countries and cities are becoming cleaner air zones.
Many cities in Italy have signs on the outskirts about restrictions for anything older than Euro 1.
Brussels is gradually bringing in a rolling restriction on older cars.
Many German cities have the "Umwelt zones" ,a cheap 5e sticker is all that's needed to comply with that for many.

It seems that Germany has a countrywide exemption for unmodified classics (as in 30plus years old). Italy is supposed to manage its low emission zones by district or whatever they call them with each setting their own exemptions although I read that historics are exempt from compliance with most zones.Many cities in Italy have signs on the outskirts about restrictions for anything older than Euro 1.

Brussels, should anyone have any wish to go there, apparently exempts historics but of course being Brussels makes you register on some tediously bureaucratic form.
Interesting announcement last month by the French federation of classic vehicles, which seems to suggest a slight U turn.

Part of our routes would take us into Rouen and possibly on the return journeys Reims.
As I understand it the emissions leglislation rules around certain towns/cities for certain cars have been delayed/ changed?

As a pre 97 car we cannot apply for a crit air vignette but I’m unsure on the current situation.
Obviously don’t want a convoy of cars to be ticketed if we can help it !!

I’m not 100% certain that Paris is the only full time CritAir area. All the other areas have to be declared when pollution reaches a certain level and then it can be a city area or even the whole Department.
I’ll be going through Rouen in April I’ll look out for any signs.

From what I can make out exemptions are to be put in place for cars classed as historic ( over 30th old),looks like some sort of vignette as proof of exemption is being planned. Obviously they are talking about French cars in the articles
As UK cars on a planned rally it looks like we would be exempt too if I’m reading it correctly..How we prove this and when the exemption is to be introduced is a bit of a grey area at present?
