So he got out an old photo and poked it about a bit:

Do you think it works or not?

I like it but have difficulty with the bottom bit, trying to decide if it's water or land or some combo. It's a bit distracting for me, shifting focus from the rest of the pic which is great.
Maybe a crop or bringing out some of the detail if it's available..?

Fair comments; I washed back some colour at 67% opacity using the history brush, but only on the top half. This is the original; I'm sure there's a good photo in there somewhere!

First one is better but can you lose the bottom 80 odd and top 60 pixels and maybe rotate anticlock about 0.5 degrees?
That would leave the ropes at the bottom of the frame and get rid of the white bit that is distracting and the strip of trees which would probably unbalance it when the bottom has gone.

Chris.
(also bored.)

Fortune favours the brave, Hank. Keep looking at it and in 10 minutes you'll think it's better!

I'd be tempted to move in much closer to all that distressed wood and create an abstract photo - lose the field of grass. Which aspect of the boat is the most interesting?

I like the detail in the timber and the dilapidated state of the boat, also the general scene which clearly shows it's had its last journey.
Unfortunately I couldn't get any closer as it was on the other side of the river!

I think I've cracked it. I left the hedge in because I like the impression that the boat is washed up n a field. Burnt in the foreground water a bit too, though I quite liked the bleached-look of the original.

I think I'm getting confused by the mass of wires and anchoring ropes, they're leading my eye out of the frame. Try cloning them out till you've only got one left. Also I think this may be one of those images that would benefit from a border that is faded/washed out/ or otherwise artistically treated so that you get a sof edge to the image rather than a hard one.

I havn't played with the colour, but I have "liquified" it a bit and played with a couple of photo shop tools such as motion blurred slightly. Tell me if you think its good/crap.

It's a bit to Van Gogh for me, at least compared to the sober boat. I think you'd need to jazz up the boat too, but then changes the entire style.

Thats some good work there 4WD, and its amazing that you managed to paint it in such a short time, it also managed to dry and you were able to scan it in as well!
