Apologie's if this has been posted before? Came across this neat program that stops Windows updating when it feels like it, Sledgehammer keeps Defender updates running but you can decide what other updates YOU want to install! Works a treat, Cheers.

I'd only recommend this if you have something that needs to run uninterrupted for a few days and you're organised enough to remember to turn it back on. Otherwise just use the active hours setting for Windows Update.

Leaving Windows unpatched because you occasionally get annoyed by a reboot isn't a good idea at all.

You can pause updates for a few days within the update settings, without the need for 3rd party software, and you don't need to remember to re-enable....

ETA - 35 days...

With the latest feature update i've got (64bit Pro) The longest i can now put off updates is 7 days, Hence using Sledgehammer, It keeps defender updated and by running the checker you can see all current available updates available any time you want ie: Daily and select the one's that you want to install so i can't really see any security concerns.

Just tell your PC not to interrupt with update and reboots during hours you don't want to be interrupted then it will do the updates when you shut your PC down. Set active hours in the update section of settings and advanced options for stopping reboots.

The whole point of Sledgehammer is not to install feature updates that will break your PC as Microsoft has a habit of introducing broken updates that rely on punters to be the Beta tester's, Cheers.

Its amazing anyone has a working windows machine in the world if you believe all that stuff.
So are there any updates you are currently refusing to install or are you up to date?
Did you have a bad experience? Do you need to talk to someone about it?

We could use something like this in our Lab at work. We run tests (controlled by a pc) that run for days and days. We've had test samples destroyed as the pc has restarted and the hydraulic actuator has gone daft. Only solution was to take the computer off the network and say hell to any updates.

This is something that is of concern to me . My current machine runs Win 8.1 , however my new machine, which if all goes well, will arrive tomorrow, will have Win 10 professional.
I had the update settings on my 8.1 machine set to alert me when updates were available, but allow me to download them when it was suitable for me. You know, not when your in the middle of a crucial part of a game , or a live auction, even.

I was pleased to discover this feature.

Assumedly the option still works as outlined in the link. Mind you, if Microsoft can allow it to be an option, they can also remove it via an update. We shall see.

The current 1909 lets you pause for up to 35 days, but it also lets you choose a closer date if you prefer.

Microsoft are 100% right to update Windows automatically; and people are daft to think they know better.

Perhaps a sledgehammer to your brain would work better.
A bit harsh mate? Please forgive me for coming on here and recommending a program? Lesson learned. Cheers.

If it's a stand-alone PC and not joined to AD then you (if you have administrator rights) can use gpedit to configure a setting which is tells windows update not to reboot if there is a logged in user. The exact option is "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations".

This works, I use it both at home and at work.

They say "jump" you say "how high?".

EDIT: I see you weren't the only one... Jesus wept.
