I earn a decent/average salary (no company director), I have been doing a bit of extra work for a friend in my line of work once a month for the past 6 months. It takes me about 3 hours to do once a month and I earn £100 after tax.

I'm not desperate for the money but its a few hours a month and it pays for a take-a-way/meal out and other bits over the weekend. Its good money if you converted it to a full time salary but I just can't really be bothered.

Having dealt with various tradesmen this seems to happen a lot. What would you not get of bed for?

Tradesmen and money are a seriously weird combo. A fella I knew was an electrician's apprentice. He went through his boss's glove compartment and fished out 13 grand in unpaid cheques.

Overtime is the key thing for employed people when it comes to 'out of the bed for less' side of things. With a basic wage whether you earn £15k or £80k you know what you're getting for your base time. Some employers reward more work-time with a worthwhile rate, others may as well call what they offer extra hours instead of overtime.

"Darling, I wouldn't get out of bed for that sort of money".

I didn't even respond, I just cut the call and will never call her again.

Tut.

I should add, I get the best guitarists and drummers in the UK for much less than that price (per hour). It's just singers that think they are 'special'.

My employer offers extra days at two-thirds of the equivalent salaried daily rate, which in turn is about a quarter of the daily contracting rate. Funnily enough they don’t get many takers and now enforce an extra mandatory two days a year.

Good on you, I would be sprinting right over for that kind of money for an hour's work! Unfortunately those kind of opportunities have yet to present themselves to me.

I sorted out a train ticket for a guy last week, Liverpool to Euston for £252.
He mentioned he would only be in the studio for 30 minutes and wanted to be there as quick as possible and home in peak time.
You didn't pay him £108 did you?

My company gives time and a half for any overtime during the week, and double time at weekends.

In my younger days I'd snap it up at almost every opportunity. I was saving up for things like cars and houses as well as going out on the lash all the time.

Now that my basic salary is higher and I'm more settled in life, although the money is still nice I think my free time is more valuable.

I can't remember the last time I came to work at the weekend to earn some extra money.

There's Musicians Union minimum which everyone gets paid. But if you are considered 'proper talent', you can ask more. If you are that good, you get paid your fee.

To be honest, I'll pay 10 times M.U. fee to get the real deal, not least as they do it 10 times quicker.

Over time is paid at time and a third if we are kept on at the end of a shift (don't get paid for the first 30 minutes though!). Time and a half if its a over time shift on a rest day.

I'll properly do two or three a month once im out of my training and able to. At the moment that will be an extra £280 a month after tax which will be nice.
