Mileage - Discs and Pads
Discussion
My work vehicle is in the garage after the brake pad wear light came on.
It's done 72K, and is on its original pads. They presumably need replacing - not bad for an auto Transit Custom.
But the dealer also tell me that the discs need changing. I'm a tad cynical / suspicious. I'd expect them to outlast a pair of pads.
Thoughts?

Get the thickness measurement to double check against Ford's limits if you aren't sure of their intentions.
Its not unheard of, pads are harder than they used to be in my experience so wear discs harder, even moreso in heavy vehicles (in general terms, is it compensation for not using asbestos like they did years ago?)
They could also be corroded and/or cracked. Probably not a scam.

Run your fingernail along the disc from the centre to the outer edge - if you can feel any scoring or a lip then you want new discs.
72k on pads shows your observation and anticipation is excellent, Regard buying the new stuff as a big pat in the back for being aware and alert.
There are guys that do a set of pads per week and a pair of front tyres per month driving a transit, you’re probably a record holder!

When I was running my van ( not a transit ), I'd easily get a year out of a set of discs/pads, which was around 90k.
And quite often yes, the discs were actually worn more so than the pads. The friction surfaces were usually still pretty good, just the discs were quite thin.
But even there there was still life left in both, I changed all 4 discs/pads every year regardless anyway.
Because why not ? reliability and ensuring no downtime is far more important to a working van than being a tight arse with maintenance.

It should only take a few hours to change them. Although maybe you're just in a queue.
And I'm sure dealer prices arent so good !!
I did always use OEM parts, aftermarket parts were never the same even those reputable brands that claimed and could well be OEM suppliers.
But the original parts always had better feel

£95 for discs and pads, with a loan vehicle. I’m not complaining about that.
At a dealer? I know things can be cheaper on commercial vehicles, but there's something wrong with that price. Are you sure that's not the labour cost?£149 for pads here: https://www.bridgendford.co.uk/aftersales/transit-...
so £95 seems like a bargain. I was thinking there was a 3 missing from the front of your pricing, and you were going to get a bit of a shock!
Maybe Transits have thicker discs but the wear range for discs on cars generally seems ridiculous - typically it'll start at maybe 28mm and can down to 27mm, so half a mm per side. On all our family cars I can't recall a garage ever just changing pads.

I am quite light on brakes in general. My previous xc60 has one pair of rear pads in 80k. Which was a bit odd as you’d expect front to go first.
I find the discs tend to rust if drivers are light on the brakes. Had the fronts on my Merc done at 40K and the dealer was confused as there was so little wear they thought they must have been recently replaced. At 80K had to have them done all round. This equates to about 5 and 10 years old though, with the car really only used for a couple of long trips per month. Indie told me I should do a few heavy stops each time I drive it. Finding the rears rusting on several of our cars and causing vibration under braking.

Not harder - the industry term is more aggressive, because of the materials which have been used to replace asbestos.surveyor said:
Cheers all. Looks like it’s not unreasonable then.
I would prefer it if the dealer was not taking 2 days to change them, but I think I’m just suffering from being late in the day in the workshop.
Dealers? Two days?! I would prefer it if the dealer was not taking 2 days to change them, but I think I’m just suffering from being late in the day in the workshop.
Why on earth haven’t you done it yourself? 46 hours faster and about £240 quid cheaper.
Sometimes I think people use the dealership just because they like moaning about things

Have you ever changed discs on the front of a transit ? They are not something you would want to do at home if things go wrong. Even more so if its the rears on an RWD van.Why on earth haven’t you done it yourself? 46 hours faster and about £240 quid cheaper.

I work in a transit centre and do them daily just put it this way I wouldn't do them outside my house on a axle stand etc. Usually we get 2 sets of pads out of a set of discs on transit and they do have a fair bit of gap between ford limit and new something like 5-6mm of wear from new. But 80k out of a set of pads is extremely good going ive replaced sets by 20k on some vehicles.

This I would love too see someone try and undo the t50 torx bolts that hold the hubs to the upright without either snapping the torx bit or rounding the bolts. £95 for just pads is dirt cheap tbf.

Interesting, so you have to take the hubs off to change a disk on Transits?I work in a transit centre and do them daily just put it this way I wouldn't do them outside my house on a axle stand etc. Usually we get 2 sets of pads out of a set of discs on transit and they do have a fair bit of gap between ford limit and new something like 5-6mm of wear from new.
