We are addicted. I've just worked out how much we've spent on Nespresso pod over the last year and I'm in shock.

Between the two of us we have spent on average £30 a month!!! Roughly 90 cups a month!

Also, does anyone have a recommendation on how to reduce costs?

We drink lungo sized mugs of coffee. They are either black or white. No cappuccino, frappy, latte espresso things. We like quite strong coffee with a good crema. We are time poor so a one (ok two) button press coffee that Nespresso gives is is very convenient.

We have a cafetiere and aeropress both of which are fiddly and time consuming. We have had a filter machine and the coffee wasn't great. We have also tried cheaper 3rd party pods and they either didn't work properly or gave poor coffee.

Any ideas other than a nice(!) jar of instant? Presumably a budget bean to cup machine but will it save money or only serve to exacerbate our addiction?

How much does everyone else spend a month and for how many drinkers?

I've just completed a twelve month £35 per month sub for a £1 vertuo machine. After a year I still have £108 left so I've spent ~£26 per month on average, however the vertuo coffee does cost more, based on my classic pod expenditure I was closer to £20 per month.

Finding third party pods you like is the trick (unless you have a Vertuo or most the rivals). I was given an Aldi lunghi and that was quite acceptable and I think worked out at under 12p a shot outside of sales.

I paid a little over £200 for a Krups bean to cup machine about 20 months ago from amazon.de, mostly because the waste annoyed me so much with pods. Very happy with the results although it took a while to find the best combination of beans (I mix two different brands together as I discovered by accident that I like the combination)
Strangely the same machine was about £100 more on amazon.co.uk at the time.

For us, the biggest issue with B2C is the real estate required on the counter. Our Pixie takes up soooo little soace, offers ultimate repeatabilty and ease of use...its hard to say no really.

I accept its not the ultimate in coffee or economics, but it worls for us....

So far, none of the copies have matched up to the real thing.

Coffee pods are one of the most f...ed up inventions of recent years IMO. So much unnecessary plastic waste created!

Nespresso's pods are 100% recyclable for free. In all the time I've owned mine I think only a handful haven't been bagged up and returned to them for recycling.

I almost don't want to know what I spend on coffee; I enjoy it, it's piss easy to get a decent brew fast and no mess to clear up after. I probably enjoy more cups because it's so easy in many instances where I wouldn't bother making a pot or French press...

33p a cup for coffee you enjoy is an utter bargain. I wouldn’t worry about it at all tbh.

The best thing, for me, about nespresso is the coffee ready in fewer than 60 seconds facility. The taste....well if you like it, that's all that matters.

Spend on coffee beans here is £25 which makes 60 cups which lasts 3-5 weeks depending if I'm making for anyone else other than me. I also sometimes have to make special trips to buy it which is another £10. Not including the time taken

Overall, very worth it for me.

Similar here, £22-25 for 1kg/month (depending on what bean I fancy) from the roasters under a rail arch near my office.

Does anyone know if the "Ispirazione Firenze Arpeggio Decaffeinato" is the same as what was just "Arpeggio Decaffeinato"?

Edit: never mind, just ordered them anyway as I'm running out of Arpeggios and needed some more decafs as well.

Pretty sure theres some bullst marketing going on here.

I went to do a reorder of the old usuals, and none of them were listed anymore. Instead, its the italian variations thing.

ordered a load to try, and when they arrive, they have a 2 word italian connction followed by the oriiginal name and colourings...

So, yes, I would say Apreggio is still the same, as is Roma, Ristretto and Vivalto lungo.

My main irritation is that the water tank on my Dolce Gusto is not qiite big enough for two mugs. And it sounds like a piledriver. Still uae it far too often though...

We were similar to the OP and then one day the machine broke.

My Mrs bought one of these instead https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8477958 for less than £60.

I'm not one to dismiss things easily but it was just as crap as you'd expect. I was fairly sure it was grounds for divorce. Then by complete chance, I made the perfect cup of coffee with it.

Going back to pod coffee, ot tastes like dishwater. Granted, the pod coffee is consistent whereas with this, there is a skill to getting it right but it's a challenge we enjoy.

£18 a month for me on 3x200g of Volcano beans, which are roasted down the road from me. They're the beans that you'll find in most coffee shops in Brixton area, and I think 'all' weworks.

That gets me around 33 cups of coffee, 55p a cup - I have used various machines, nespresso, etc, I've never been impressed by any of them. My work has a couple of Jura machines, which look to cost thousands, even that spits out a fairly grim coffee IMO.

I've got a Rocket machine with a Eureka grinder, which was a fair investment, but I can make coffee as good as any good indi I've been to for 50 pence.

I have a bean to cup Delonghi which makes better coffee than high street chain coffee shops and rivals some independents and restaurant coffee I've had.
Buying 1Kg bags of beans from various on-line and shop sources, It works out cheaper than decent instant and after 3 years I'd paid off the cost of the machine.

I shunned the pod machines because of the cost plain and simple, I like a large coffee which is 2 pods plus, a go, multiplied by far too many a day and it gets expensive quick.

Amazon (other on-line retailers are available) do stainless steel dishwasher safe reusable pods that you can fill with your own ground or pre ground coffee. That might well be worth investigating for pod machine users wanting to save a bean or two (pun intended).
