What wire for tow bar lighting
Discussion
Going to be redoing some wiring on a older car, need to run a new indicator wire for a tow bar, needs to be yellow (left indicator) and another green (in case I decide to work from the other side)
I might go to a scrappy and pull some random bits, however that’s a 2 hour round trip, oily shoes, jeans, getting wet etc (I’m getting old)
What do I need to type in to the internet to get the correct grade stuff
I suspect I need around 5 m
Yellow
Green
Black
Brown
I’d like to get the colours correct for oem look and to help future owners troubleshoot!
Any tips of gauge/ grade. Will be exposed to the elements a little bit, but not massively

How much current will this wire be carrying, and over how much distance?
Not muchIt’s just for rear lights
So
Indicator
Brake
So 21w max per wire (although in reality it will be minimal as all my trailers are led)
This is just to extend from the right to the left so it all exits the interior on one side rather than both
If you're in the UK, visit vehiclewiringproducts.co.uk and look at their thinwall PVC coated wires. You can get them in single core or multiple cores. If you're using a common ground then you'll need to add up the total current but 21W at 12V is less than a couple of Amps so the lightest wire they sell would be more than enough - that's 0.5mm2 conductor. This is a great source for connectors too.
The longer the length the thicker the cable needed, thin cable is also harder to terminate
For a 5 meter run use 5 amp or above rated cable
See here https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/66/...
14/0.30 8.75 amp is best for the job

Im not fully understanding what your doing here, are you rewiring the vehicle or just the towing electrics. The colours youve quoted their are the colours of the seven core cable to the towing plug, but if its the vehicle wiring you are replacing then the original wiring colours will be completely different from seven core colours.
Hi all
Thanks for the superb responses I knew I’d get, got various bits on order now
I’m just fitting a tow bar using a bypass relay
I want to keep it neat and make it easily serviceable, so trying to keep everything over one side
I’ve not seen the car yet and won’t before hand so sticking with standard trailer colours to bring the oppsite side indicator and tail feed across so it’s all neat
Then if I ever need to swap out the tow socket and wiring (they often go scabby after a few years) it’s just a simple job on one side just doing the connections to the relay
Stuff like this is always hard to explain, but you’ve all answered my question which is much appreciated
Thankyou
