Speeding busy bodies - what happens

Now, I am 95% sure that I've got nothing to worry about, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
I've just had a letter through from the "Speedwatch Co-ordinator" naming a place and time where I had exceeded the posted speed limit. It then goes on to say that according to police records my vehicle has been caught before (18 months previously). This incident has now been logged with Thames Valley Police Roads Policing Department who may contact me further.
Now, given that these old duffers appear to use the speed shown on one of these roadside indicator things, and then they have to link it up to the specific car that's triggered that speed, I'm not sure it's anywhere close to fair and accurate. Plus, that means that I would have to have been travelling in a specific direction to have triggered that device - i.e. towards my house, and at the time indicated I would have been travelling away from my house.
I presume it means nothing, but would be interested to hear if anyone has actually had any follow-up to this type of letter.
The one thing that this has made me realise is that people who claim that they can't be sure who was driving are probably not lying. I've been having a 15 minute discussion with my wife, and each of us is certain that it was the other driving that car at that time.

Is it one of those smiley face / frowny face screens that shows your speed? I drive past a few regularly where I get the smiley face for driving under the 30mph limit, then it picks up a car approaching at speed from behind or heading in the other direction and gives me a 40+mph frowney face.
So I'd question their infallibility as devices for singling out a speeding vehicle when there is more than one vehicle nearby.
