As we know loyalty means nothing these days.
My current house insurance company Esure have increased their renewal premium by 50% although there have been no claims/changes whatsoever.

So far CTM and DL have provided quotes of 50% of the Esure premium.

The proof of good insurance is how the company behaves in the event of a claim. So has anybody experience of claims with Direct line, Halifax or Hastings?

Through CTM the Esure quote is about 20% less than their renewal quote me. So they obviously don't care about existing customers.

Also you need to make sure the cover is like for like, especially now that at least one major insurer is removing big pieces of cover, cover for cash for example.

Another item to look for is cover for items taken out from the home which might mean watches, luggage, glasses, even clothes for a weekend away.

There is also a thing called a pairs and sets clause. I heard of one man whose toaster caught fire and burned a kitchen cupboard, this was a single unit in a bank of four. It was out of production and the single damaged unit couldnt be replaced and insurers wouldnt pay for 4 to be matched.

I have only heard of two insurers with great claims handling, Hiscox and John Lewis insurance, although I have just paid more and moved to Churchill because of cover being cut from my old insurance.

Try Direct Line. They have been good with me after a lightning strike this year. And if you go for their premium cover it includes holiday insurance.

I'm with Churchill. They were great to deal with when I had a break in, and my premium only went up a small amount (~£20) for the next year or so before coming back down again.

Direct line sorted out an attempted break on at our with no fuss a couple of years ago.

After about 5 years with them we have just changed to to the hefty increases.

Can’t fault Aviva with three claims in last 5 years

I have previously used Direct Line for car insurance, whilst I never claimed, I found them professional and good to deal with when updating my policy (car changed every 6 months)

I tried them for home insurance and it came up with a quote for over £600 annually, without any additional bolt on cover.

One of the comparison websites pumped out prices of approximately a third of that!!!

I was with Aviva for car, house and holiday insurance. They doubled the house insurance at renewal last year and even after speaking to them they couldn't bring it down, so took a cheaper option for the same cover.

Insurance is just not rational sometimes. I made a claim last year for a leak which must have been £2000. My renewal from Aviva came through and had gone down.
Wife and I have both cars insured with them and both recently renewed with no or minimal increase and I couldn’t find cheaper anywhere else.

Agree with the above. I made a £2k+ claim last year with Direct Line for lightning damage and renewed this week for a lower premium.

I'm with Halifax. Have been for years. I live quite near a river (which has never flooded) and they are very competitive. Had a big claim in 2018, burst pipe. They were fantastic. Appointed a firm called Woodland to do all the work and their guys couldn't do enough. And the quality of the work was superb.

And at renewal, my premium went down????

Ensure have whacked mine up from £196 to £230 for no reason at all. Didn’t get around to sorting it out so have auto renewed.

My car insurance with them also went up last year, will be searching around this year as they seem to be taking the pee with existing customers.

I had 2 car policies and the home policy arrive on the same day for renewal. 10 mins on the phone saved a collective £261. Always give them a call and ask nicely for them to check for additional discounts.

My home insurer tried to add the car onto the policy. However, it was going to be for 10 months as they expiry dates done line up and about £60 more than I pay now if I worked it out to cover 12 months.

Not home insurance, but they were really good when my car got written off. Very slick process for hire car, dropping the car off for assessment.

Couple of days later they tell me it's a write off and offer me pretty much what I paid for it 6months earlier.

Our Home Insurance renewal just came in and was up by £50.00, took the above advice and asked about any additional discount and within 2 minutes got £55.00 off renewal premium. Thank you Phil for your tip!

Just switched to Halifax
Their intro letter does say they there is a 30% introductory discount in first year. Maybe they have to tell you that it will jump next year now? I’m a serial switcher anyway, to avoid hikes

Also they make a big thing of saying it will auto renew next year, quite heavy in saying they will try to trace through bank if the card on file doesn’t work. Unless you call them to say you don’t want to auto renew. So 10 mins on phone, 101 ID questions to tell them to remove !
