Ok, looking for some cheap fun and have seen a 2001 Merc S Class 320 with 170K and dealer history. Every conceivable extra- which inevitably extends to small bits of rust in usual places: rear arches/ boot lid/ door bottoms but it's 700 quid. Worth a punt....or

Engine and gearbox in these solid? Airmatic suspension semi-reliable? Do any of these things matter at 700 quid?!

I would have thought you can sell some of the bits off it if it all goes very wrong and cover your costs.

Rust isn’t fun in my experience.
If you are just going to drive it in to the ground, fair enough.
If you think you might get tempted into putting some things right - not a good start.

Yeah true, rust isn't horrendous. (there is none underneath at all) Yet...

Everything else really is immaculate and the service history is perfect

Would make a decent stop gap car I'd imagine but as a long term ownership proposition, no thanks.

Just that - a stop gap car. Maybe keep it for a year or so - drive it infrequently but with a smile on my face ( until the air suspension warning light comes on...)
